Cleaning my 02 maxima engine area

i have an 02 maxima and dirt has build up in the engine area. i was wondering if it is safe to spray the engine area with water to keep it looking clean and decent? help please. thanks

some recommend covering the alternator with a plastic bag but i've washed mine without that and never had any problems. there's also engine degreasers and soaps you can use and than hose them off.

I cover them up too.Also, I use castrol Super Clean degreaser!!Does a great job! First, I spray down the car with water- just the outside, not under the hood. That way if any over spray gets on it, it's diluted.Next, open the hood, and spray down everything with the degreaser. Let it set for the recommended time.Hose off with a gentle spray, do not power wash it!!And, hose off the outside of the car again in case there was some overspary.
