How much of a difference does a "clean" VLSD make? I'm looking at buying one of 2 VLSD's for sale:

#1 is $225 and will be "drained, cleaned, and resealed with a liquid gasket." Not sure if its 6 or 5 bolt nor if its USDM or JDM (guess I should ask...). I will put new oil in it.

#2 is a JDM 5-bolt for $140. The oil was changed and pumpkin resealed 10k miles ago, however has not been cleaned (probably never?). I'd rather not reopen the pumpkin to clean it and then reseal it (so I would use as is with new oil).

Does a cleaned VLSD make that much of a difference? Which one should I get? Total miles on both VLSD's is unknown, although #2 was imported from Japan when the previous owner bought it. Both were previously installed in USDM 240's so they won't need new parts or modification. Thanks for the help. Plan on getting and installing one of these this weekend. Can't wait to get rid of the open-diff.

lol , i saw those on craigslist.. well you want to go for the one that is 6 bolt. since the 240 axles are 6 bolt. so you want something that would actually fit. usdm or jdm does not mean much to me if it does nto work same goes to the clean or dirty one. i could clean and reseal a broken one and put new oil in it. so make sure they are working properly. I got mine from junk yard off of a crushed j30 for $100. any it works perfectly. do a litlle more search and check the jnk yards.

I figured all the junkyards around here would have been picked already. I don't really mind paying a little more for the convience and knowing it works.

How hard is it to open, clean and reseal a pumpkin? -aesic

Maybe a better question is, how hard is it to clean and reseal a VLSD? Is it worth $85 to have it cleaned, or should I just do it myself?

I also get a feeling that the cheaper, uncleaned VLSD was used "less harshly", if that makes a difference.

I'd really appreciate feedback because I will be buying one of the two tomorrow. Thanks.

Afternoon bump before I buy one tonight.

Clean it myself ($85 cheaper) or buy it pre-cleaned....

cleaned?bs to me. since you're getting a used piece, id replace the carrier bearings and get a new pinon bearing as well. you dont even have to mess with backlash or anything, just pressing in new bearings

cleaned doesnt matter, it takes like 10 min to pull the cover off anyway, buy a can of brake cleaner and spray the **** out of it if you want it clean inside.

Where can I get carrier and pinon bearings and how much do the cost?

I ended up buying the "uncleaned" one for $140. From reading here and talking to the guy I bought it from, it doesn't seem like its necessary to clean it, only flush out the gear oil once or twice and replace the those bearings if desired.

Also, does anyone know the wrench sizes needed to install the AXELS from a JDM VLSD? I know that I need 12-18 and a 36, but are there any others? If anyone can give me a quick rundown of how to install the axels (or a link to one) that would be appreciated. The 240sx.org DIY install (http://www.zilvia.net/installs/lsd/lsdswap.asp) only covers pumpkin replacement, not axels replacement for my JDM 5-bolt VLSD (yes, I've searched).

I plan on installing it tomorrow. Can't wait.
