As part of my futzing around the garage regiment, I cleaned the throttle body on my M. After I had taken the throttle body off and leaned it, I re installed it and took the car for a spin. The car has not moved since. This morning it was a bit cooler, and I noticed the idle was a little higher than normal, even after the engine had warmed up I found the idle to be just under the 1K rpm mark?

Is that normal of do I have to reset the ECU?

the "drive-by-wire TBs" on the newer Ms and Qs have very sensitive actuators and sensors that can be damaged so TB cleaning is NOT RECOMMENDED.

One of the things you can easily mess up is your idle speed. You will need to perform a new idle air learning procedure. IDK how to do that though

Thanks for the info, pretty scary note, anyway, I will reset it and see what happens. If doesn't work I guess I will have to replace it. Funny thing is that the TB wasn't overly dirty and all I did was remove it and use a micro fiber cloth to clean the loose soot out if I did not use any chemicals or sprays. Car runs fine and starts great, just idling a little higher than it was before say less than 100 rpm difference- do you know what the idle speed should be?

I believe it is 650 RPM +/- 50. This is at normal operating temperature..no additional load on the engine (lights, AC, etc).

I hope the idle is the least of your issues....cleaning the throttle body can lead to its replacement. I just had mine replaced after a cleaning by a dealer. After the cleaning, I noticed the idle was extremely high so I performed the idle learning procedure. It worked, but after that the car would throw codes and go into limp mode.

Good luck.

what is the "idle learning procedure" and how can one do this? Since you posted you did this yourself, can you share the knowledge?

Also, what chemical did you use to clean your Throttle Body? The number one issue of killing your TB is when you actually touch the butterfly valve, not cleaning it.

Perfect thanks, took the car out at lunch time and the idles settled about 650 to 700 rpm, all looks normal, but thanks for the quick responses...........

Did not use any chemicals worked a microfiber cloth into the front and back of the throttle body and just rubbed the surfaces. I did push the butterfly valve a few times. I will note that I did remove the tb from the intake, unplugged the connection.

Thanks
