Many Gen-1 FX45/35 owners are reporting there starter will not engage on the first key-turn. Some say they are able to fix this condition by waiting 3 minutes and then they successfully start the car.
Further, you verify you do NOT have any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). So now what?
First, the fact your starter will not engage is the first clue. This suggests your Body Control Module (BCM) is not authorizing power to your starter. But the problem may or may not be the BCM. Instead, it could be one of several other systems.
One such system is your security system that is monitoring your door locks. What's that you say? Well, each door has a auto-resetting fuse called a PTC-R that is normally closed at normal temperature. Then when you open your door, the circuit cause this PTC-R to heat up and the circuit opens as a it is designed to do. The problem is that as this dime-size material inside the PTC-R ages, it can short to ground and/or remain open for a long period of time -- until it cools down -- and then the circuit is closed again. I.e., you can think of the PTC-R as a auto-reset fuse.
So one problem is that the BCM monitors your door locking circuit (which is part of your security system) and when it sees an "open circuit" then it sees that as a problem and you can't start your car. Consequently, this problem occurs more often when the outside air temperature is over 80F, because OAT can affect a weak or old PTC-R. Note: Change are you have also been experiencing problems opening or locking your door before you started experiencing "no-engine-start" problems. Either way, the PTC-R is only a couple bucks, but replacing it is expensive. (Google how to McGyver your door locking box instead of paying a Dealer $400-$600 per door.)
Second, if you are having problems with an intermittent no-enge-start in cold weather, there are a number of people who have fixed this no-start problem by replacing the Air Conditioning (AC) Amplifier box that is located under the radio. Note: Each FX model has a different AC-Amplifier part number based on how your car came equipped from the factory, so finding the right AC-Amplifier (used) maybe a problem. That being said, I would remove the AC-Amplifier... open the box... and look for a cold soldier joint you can fix for $0 if you own a cheap soldier iron; or you can take the AC-Amplifier to a local stereo or satellite repair shop that will charge you $50 to diagnose your components "at the board level," which means they don't need a schematic.
Third, you can clean your fuses located by the driver's left knee... next to the emergency brake. Just take one fuse out at a time and put it back using the fuse puller of a pair of needle-nose pliers. (Use a small brass wire brush is best.) This is obviously the cheapest way to go and if you are not technical -- almost anyone can do this -- if nothing else to rule out some mechanic trying to charge you for an AC-Amplifer or door locking box or BCM.
Attached is a summary of where you can find several fuse boxes in you car. And for some strange reason, Infiniti put a number of fuses right next to your battery, which makes these fuses and relays hard to get to.
IF YOU DO HEAR YOUR STARTER ENGAGE WHEN YOU TURN YOUR KEY... but the engine will not turn-over; then maybe you do have a dead battery. Which is why I recommend everyone buy these two items so you don't waste your time and money waiting for a tow truck to show up!
Also, if you starter turns your motor over, but your engine will not start, then maybe you need to replace your Hitachi brand Crank Position Sensor... located under you engine, on the passenger side, behind that bottom skid plate.
