Hello,Reading some other posts it seems that the transmission filter in a Q45/94 is basically a mesh. Does it mean that it can be cleaned? If so, how? Or does it have to replaced? I talked to the parts dept at the dealer and the guy told me it was a not-serviceable filter.... What does that mean?

A few months back I did the "poor man's transmission fluid exchange" (drain, refill, run engine for two minutes, drain again, fill, repeat....) but I did not drop the pan. I plan on re-doing it now, but I am not sure what to do about the filter.

Tks

If you read Q45tech's posts, he found under microscopic examination particles trapped in a cut open filter not visble to the naked eye.

But if you really want to do it correctly and not leave expired fluid or contaminants in your ATF, http://www.bgfindashop.com .

the mesh strainer in the Q45 sump can easily be washed clean. Anything it HAS collected is BIG and non magnetic or the magnet around the inlet would have got it. It basically catches chunks that would plug a passage or a valve.

Really fine stuff (grinding compound) requires a real filter-like the external one fittel to 94+ vehicles. The damaging stuff is typically from 2-100 microns.

This is one big reason why complete fluid changes will greatly prolong ultimate life--clean fluid + no wear. 'Trashy' clean-looking fluid = lots of wear going on. If you were to run a particle count and metals analysis on most transmission fluid you would faint. If it is not CLEAR--red, but transparent-its full of wear debris.

Tks for the feedback.Does the 94 have the external transmission filter? Is it ok to use an aftermarket transmission (internal/pan) filter such as Fram? Or should I stay with OEM?

Brian,Tks for the info. Where is the remote filter located at? The dealer quoted me $142.00 for this filter. Quite pricy. Does this make sense, or are they taking me for a ride...

B/M racing sells external filters that use oil filters, which will be much cheaper up front and in the long run!!!! Go with that.

got mine from joe awhile ago, paid around 70-80$,good for another 100,000. while something aftermarket could be rigged to work for less money, the oem kit is a direct, fast swap with no fabrication required.just do it! much more important to replace this filter than worry about the screen in the pan- amazing how many here replace the screen, yet continue to drive with the original external filter clogged in bypass mode.

didnt realize it was that cheap from joe, did you get yours after the nissan part price increase?

The filter is bolted onto the frame by the battery.... Pretty easy to see but kinda hard to get to.

I think I got it before the price increase! kit comes with filter pre-mounted to steel bracket with new hoses- simple to swap old with new from below once underbelly pan is removed-maybe 5 minutes.
