So it was a warmer day here in Salt Lake compared to what its been the past week or so, got up around 55-60*. I took the opportunity to wash out my engine bay.

I used this product:

Here is the engine bay before, I already have the air ducts/intake all wrapped in plastic and taped up

And here is what it looks like cleaner. It is still a little wet in this picture, I took it for a little drive to heat up then engine and finish drying it off but never took the final picture with plastic off and completely dry.

Wow,

What a different. What I usually do is go to the car wash and I open my hood and wash her. But every time I do that I am scared to start up the car. Always thinking no it won't start. It did start tho every time but I am still paranoid about it.

So funny that you posted this!

I was just looking under my hood yesterday and was thinking that it was time for a clean. Looks great...you just inspired me!

it smelled like that chemical for a while after I used it though...takes a couple days to burn off apparently. But it looks good.

I'd make sure the ventilation ducts are closed...make sure the car is set to RECIRCULATE before you turn off your car.

You can also use the Back to Black to dress up all the black plastic parts in yoru engine bay too.

From experience, I have found that washing your engine with water can corrode the electrical connections.

Had this problem on my I30. I washed down the engine and then a day or two later ended up with a knock sensor problem.

Just needed to be reseated and some corrosion cleaned from the terminals.

I still used this method to clean my engine!

i use high pressure water to wash every single car i work on that has a service done to it (15k, 30, 45k, 60k, etc, etc,)

Everytime i do it i spray down some degreaser on the motor let it sit there for a minute spray it down with my pressure washer, then dry it off with compressed air i have NEVER (knock on wood) had a problem with electralisis, water intrusion, or corrosion. On anything that is ranging from 90 Q45's all the way to 2008 G37's.

I do not like GUNK products since they all are about the same, it corrodes aluminum pretty badly smells like hell. Btw your overflow bottle and the likes of are still dirty....

^^^^ very interesting! I have always heard to never use a high pressure spray. But, sounds like it works fine for you!

I detail all of my cars engines from time to time. Always use Castrol Super Clean Degreaser.1. Hose down the outside of car in case of overspray.2. Open hood, put plastic over alt, air intake3. Spray degreaser and let sit 10 min.4. Spray off engine with garden hose with light pressure. Also spray rest of car5. Towel dry6. Let sit in sun to dry7. Drink beers and admire clean engines

Ya the GUNK smells real bad...

I just grabbed one off the shelf

Since I haven't really done this very often I wasn't sure about the GUNK brand.

I realize it wasn't a perfect "clean" but it is a hell of a lot better than it was.

Awesome...

I once cleaned my bay, I was at a car wash and just sprayed water everywhere in the bay, I don't think I would try that again It was running like a$$ for a few minutes due to the water, presumably on the MAF...

we live and learn...

Yup, I think as long as you cover up the Intake so you can't ingest water into your engine you are fine

Of course, others will tell you about corrosion on wires, etc.

Simple Green is a great engine degreaser and cleaner. you don't get the weird gunk smell either.

on Simple Green. Once cleaned off, mist the engine/hoses with Tire Shine and DON'T wipe it. Drive around for 10-15 mins. Looks like new!!
