Clarification on EX tire wear

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

All-

I've been digging through pretty much all the posts in this forum to learn more about the EX, and have come across a fair number of posts re: tire wear on the EX.

Keep in mind, I am coming from a 250hp all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback which (as a brand) is known to go through its share of tires--due mostly to:

A. a factory alignment specs which include a fair amount of positive camber all-around

B. the fact that the Outback's suspension is not designed with any kind of "sport" capabilities in mind (why they gave it 250hp, I'll never understand), so it does not corner well.

C. and sure...it also has AWD with a full-time 50/50 front-to-rear torque split which does tend to nibble away at the outside tread surfaces on all 4 tires.

The EX is clearly more "sport oriented" than my Outback, so I'm just curious to find out whether anyone's gotten to the "root cause" of this--or whether anyone's tried messing with their alignment settings to flatten out the camber at all 4 wheels to help slow outer edge tire wear (?)

My "new" 2008 is apparently being delivered with 6/32" tread remaining, and all the replacement tires I've been considering are directional. So other than still being able rotate front to rear, and side-to-side (by un-mounting then swapping tires so outside edges now face "in"), it sounds like I may not be doing myself any favors by going with a slightly more performance-oriented, directional tread tire. (sorry....I just can bring myself to put a set of Yokohama light-truck off-road tires on a vehicle with this kind of performance :chuckle: )

Any feedback would be welcome.

TIA,
Tim

If your car comes with 18s you might consider the MXM4 245-50-18. I am liking the set I put on my 08 2WD. They seem to do everything better than the stock Continentals did.

Hi Jmess-

Appreciate the info. IMO, both Dunlop and Conti build some terrific tires--and some real crappy ones; sadly, its usually the crappy ones which are used as OEM.

You seem to be one of the very few folks here who's chosen to run non-standard size rubber because there are so few tire options offered in it. On the '08 EX AWD Journey I'm **supposed**to be picking up this week, it actually has the 17" rims, so I'm considering going with 235/55-17 which would knock my speedo off by approx 1 mph. I'm pretty sure I can live with that

Still not sure if I should go with a unidirectional, "sportier" class tire rather than the Grand Touring class which came on the car because from what I've read the EX tends to eat tires. All told, I don't expect to log more than 10-11k miles on this car annually, so maybe I'm over thinking this. I'd just hate to find myself in the position (again) of having a good handling vehicle which handles poorly because I wanted to save a few bucks by going with a less-sport oriented tire.

Right now, if I go with a grand touring tire I'm considering a set of Cooper Touring CS4 (V-rated); if I go with a sport all-season tire--the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (I've run these year 'round on my Outback XT with great results in summer, decent results in winter). As a compromise between summer and winter handling, I may consider either the Conti DWS or Nokian WRG-2's--neither of which handle quite as well in the summer, but offer a big improvement in winter traction. We'll see.

Thanks again for the recommendation.

Cheers,
Tim

We never experienced outer-edge wear on our OEM Duncraps.

Our Dunlops are wearing out evenly across the Tread.

After this Summer, they may be used up... then its off to the TireRack Site.

EX-

Glad to hear that. I'm hoping I don't experience it either. The Michelin Latitude HP's currently on mine seem to be wearing pretty evenly too. If it weren't for their $202/each price tag--and the fact they aren't rated terribly well in the snow, I'd consider getting another set.

I see you live in the Great White North. You may wanna' check out these tires :

Can't recall what size rims you run, but if 17"--these tires are actually cheaper than most of the 3-4 crappy tire options on Tirerack.com. I know they're very popular among other area of Canada--not to mention Europe where they're big sellers for high performance SUVs/Crossovers. I will be letting my Michelins wear until Fall when I'll be getting a set myself.

Cheers,
Tim

Oooh, me likey! :) Yeah, come to think of it, I should've known not to give winter tire advice to a Canadian - lol :rotflmao

Out of curiosity, are those 18" rims OEM? If so--off what model/year Infiniti? They look great.

Thanks,
Tim

They are 18" Nissan Altima Rims from eBay.

Here's the eBay auction >>> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0700234036

I got 4 of them shipped to me in Alberta Canada, from Florida USA for a total of $700 Canadian.

I bought 4 Infiniti Center Caps and put them on...

Whoa, nice price!

If I hadn't just bought a set of OEM 19" rims with tires for my old 7-Series off ebay, I would get a set of these, too. That way I could run my stock 17" rims with winter treads. Rats! :tisk:

FWIW, I'm only a fan of chrome rims on classic cars and not much else, so I think you made the right choice in rims!
