Hartford City Council Meetings to Begin with Muslim Prayers

I see the separation of church and state is alive and well in Hartford. My issue is with any prayer at the beginning of a government meeting, but the council takes it a step further and feels the need to make a statement. I'm waiting for the ACLU to intervene but have a feeling it's not going to happen. Perhaps some church will carry out a false flag style operation and burn some Bibles or equally attack the Christian religion in order for the council to intervene and make a statement on their behalf as well.

To paraphrase Animal Farm, "All religions are equal, but some are more equal than others."

First couple of Google results tell me that your link's bogus.

Council has said "no" to adding an Islamic prayer to its pre-meeting prayers.
Hartford Courant wrote:HARTFORD — — The city council's plan to diversify its pre-meeting prayers to include an Islamic invocation — announced days before the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks — has sparked an outpouring of angry calls and e-mails from infuriated residents.
Were you planning to clarify that this wasn't to be the only prayer leading off the meetings?

You want to go ahead and cry out about the separation of Church and State, I'll be right there with you, but let's be consistent, hm?

Well, not exactly bogus as the word "reversal" and the phrase "had planned to go ahead" were penned in the article you linked. But, the AP article just got posted an hour or so ago, I didn't see up when I was reading up on this...all the topics I saw were dated the 7th or 8th. Glad to see the people still have some influence over the local officials and that there's still some thinking going on in CT.

Apparently the original NBC posting was in error when it mentioned that no prayer normally took place.

I figured; I was just teasing.

I don't know about you, but it kinda gives me mixed feelings. While I would very much prefer that our government did not involve officially-organized prayer, I'm given pause by the fact that people got in an uproar about Islamic prayer, specifically, where no uproar was incited by the prayer that's been there up to now.

I'm right there with you. If there was no prayer normally I'd have a problem with the sudden "inclusion"of an Islamic prayer (and the timing of it), but to suddenly voice objection to something that has been happening all on the sole basis of the specific religion is far more egregious than any prayer ever could have been.

And why NBC uses "Muslim" and "Islam" interchangeably as if they were the same thing I've no idea. Hacks... :tisk:
