over last summer I installed some CDT 6.5" components in the front, and they sound VERY nice, except they are completely lacking on the lower end. I get pretty much no bass at all.

So after awhile, I have decided that I need a small sub to full out the lower end for my music. Thing is, I dont want anything overly big, I'd actually like to keep it as small as possible, both for space and weight savings. I also dont have an amp right now either, something that I know I am going to need to run a sub, no matter how small it is.

I dont know all that much about picking out audio equipment, so I was hoping some of you folks could point me in the right direction.

Again,

-something small-something as light as possible-an amp to run it/them (and my components)-ideas where I could tuck the thing in (behind front seats? in the trunk?)

etc.

watcha guys got up your sleeves?

EDIT: sorry, this is in my 92 S13 Fastback of course

Well, I'm known for asking ...

What's your budget? How are your woodworking skills? How about your fiberglass skills? Is "remove-ability" a concern?Do you wann keep your spare?

Not knowing those things...There was a Momo pre-fab 10" (small w/ good performance) on clearance at crutchfield a month or so ago, and it combined with a decent 4 channel (stereo front, bridge rear) amp from a number of manufacturers (my most common suggestions are Autotek, Rockford, JL & Phoenix Gold).

budget:hmm I was thinking like, under $300 for both sub and amp

woodworking skills:good enough to make a box

fiberglass skills:never tried

remove-ability:not really, unless its in an inconvenient spot.

spare:yes I would like to keep it

Based on that, I would suggest a small Autotek 2 channel amp SX2100 or so, check ebay for deals, and an 8" Bazooka (unpowered) tube.

Others may look down on this set-up, but for someone looking for just enough low-end to drown out the road noise, it will serve you just fine.

Allow about $35 to $50 for fuse, power, speaker wires and cables.

well, I'm not really opposed to spending a bit more if its going to make a big difference in quality. money isnt really THAT big of a concern unless we're talking about outrageous numbers. I want something that is going to match the quality of my components, just for the lower end....

$300 for driver, amp, enclosure, and wiring? That's tough

for amp and driver - you're looking at about 200 for the amp and 100 for the sub

some amps b/w $180-200:US Acoustics 4085RF 551xAvionixx 440.4Tsunami

some subs, all around $100, take small sealed enclosures, and not too much to power:Infinty perfect 10.1Alpine Type RElemental Designs Kmore suggestions if you need..

I am going to buy Rockford Fosgate RF 501x 4 channel amp for 185 bucks and power front components and 1 10inch P1 Sub all for under 300 bucks. I too don`t want to add a lot of weight or make my car shake the neighbors house!

i don't see why you guys are all so concerned about heavy systems...weight in the trunk of a RWD is ideal for driving in the snow

I got two for one JBL GTO series 10s (1000w peak) and put them in .75 boxes, total weight 50 pounds. Amp adds probably 20 to that. its plenty of bass, if not excessive. my hatchback (240sx of course) channels the bass really well. Amp, subs, materials cost me under 250 dollars.

Oh and you dont need to relocate the battery to the back to fix weight distribution if you got a sub :)

I just put something into my BMW that sounds like you may be interested in. I have a set of the CDT components myself and they sound awsome. For a sub, Resonant Engineering ( http://www.reaudio.com ) make an 8" sub that is amazing for an 8". I have had a 10" CDT and an old 10" RF sub and this little 8" beats them both. The sub will fit in a .22 CF sealed box or what I have is a .5 CF ported box. I only paid $49 shipped for the sub from http://www.visionaryaudio.com/ . They are very helpful and will even help you design a box to fit your needs. This sub does not need much power either, only 200 wrms at 2ohms. Amps that size are fairly cheap. You will not hear this sub 5 cars away but it will give you plenty of bass especially in a hatchback.

Good Luck,Kevin

ditto the Basslink. It is good and it kinda looks like a factory piece in some cars.

Rex... you and your Autotek amps, I love it! If I ever come over some free Autotek shirts, banners, or random fun crap... i'll let you know.

Focal makes a 5" sub, yes not a 5 " midbass, but subwoofer. it can be installed in an enclousre as small as .3 of a cubic foot. You could easily build an enclosure to fit under your drivers seat. maybe out of 1/2 inch MDF and Fiberglass the shape of the floor for the bottom of the enclosure. Try looking at Alpines Accuclass D digital mono amp, to match it. This might go a little over your budget though, sorry I didn't read that part very carefully.

resonant engineering 8 (RE8) is a very good choice... cheap as hell and works well with around 150W RMS (people have fed them 1000W for a few seconds without it blowing). it's an amazing little 8 as TXKev already mentioned, and you could run it off the rear channels of a 4 channel amp no prob, and have the front channels of that amp runnin to your components...

damn just looked up the infinity basslink and that seems like a good all rounded sub/amp combo... sounddomain has it on sale right now for $300 (http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/INFBASSLINK that's prolly the cheapest/easiest solution for bass
