this post had about 17 different places i could post it, but i did it here. appologies if it hurt anyone's feelings.

what are some of your guys feelings on good "drifting" tires for the s13 240sx. i'm purchasing Falken Ziex's but not for the purpose to drift, i just need new tires. anyone know how the falken ziexs are for drifting? and what would be a prime choice, or everyone's oppinion on good drifting tires. (and im curious about the ziex)

If you're not going to drift why are you concerned about "drifting" tires? It's not like it's a bad thing to do, especially if you're responsible about it. The only consequence to telling us is that you'll need to post pics and vids.

I really don't think it matters what kind of tire you're running on until you get really good at drifting.

Are you just getting these for the front?

tires help alot when drifting. i had some crap yokohama grand touring tire for the front and alls i got was understeer. i just purchased some dunlop direzza dz101 tires for 54 bucks a piece off tirerack, and man are they awesome. Nomuken also runs these on his skyline. They are cheap, at least in the 15 in size, and they grip real well.

well, wouldn't you want LESS grip for drifting?? also i was thinking to put them on my back tires, but should i use them in the front for drifting? if so why? tell me the basics that i need to know drift tires.

you need traction to break traction. you also need traction to get ur car back under control.

I just went through a pair of Dunlop Direzzas DZ101. I liked them, they are up there with the yoko ES100s.

okay, i understand the getting back undercontrol but wouldn't you want non sticky tires to get the drift going in the first place? someone please explain the principles with the tires to me.

Drifting is a lot about grip than it seems on the surface.

Sure, we can all get bald tires and go sideways.. however, a stickier tire provides different advantages, some of which are:

1) Being able to initiate a much higher speed2) Maintaining control of a drift for a longer period of time/higher speed

- imagine going into and out of a 60mph drift w/ stickies... now imagine that w/ a tire that has no icky icky.

What some people don't realize is that autocross setups & drifting setups are actually very similar.

I believe there is a very good thread (or 100) detailing these ideas.

However, when initially learning to drift, less expensive (usually also means less sticky) tires are preferred because of most of our situations (we're all *** broke).

well, if you are drifting around a lot, the rears will go first, obviously. fronts don't usually wear out much or nearly as much as rears for our cars in general, drifting or not.

You will always want good tires for the front no matter what... don't wanna be driving normal and can't turn cuz you have no grip.

What a lot of people do is have a set of decent rims + tires & 2 rims + tires that they swap into the back for drifting practice.

That way you stay safe daily (no driving on patchy or fugged up tires in the rear)

Just remember that drifting started because a bunch of broke *** kids wanted to entertain themselves.

And don't drift wrecklessly:

zerothread?id=121275

Or someone may have to smack you in the head .

Good luck!

Another source I forgot to mention is that you can usually go to a place like America's tires & ask them for some used tires, like a pair for your spare drift rims.

They sold me one for like $5 & 20 max to mount & balance. Not the best choice of tires all the time, but they work and are good cheap methods for practicing.

well, the practice i don't really need to worry about, i HAVE been practicing for about 5 months now, on and off, and admitedly im a big n00b, but i know my sh'it and i got the car to do it. im taking it slow, safe, and sure. it's a progressive learning curve, but I'm better than anyone else around, (around north chicago suburbs lake county that is.) just takes practice.

- and i think i'm gonna stick with the ziex's for my drift tires. i want something dependable but cheap, not REALLY cheap and only somewhat dependable.

never tried the zeix. I like the Falken st115's, Dunlop sport fm901's, and Toyo Proxes FZ-4 the best out of all the tires ive drifted on so far.

they no longer grip when heated, slip and slide. Not fun to try and control a 3rd gear drift when the tires get to this point.
