Hey everyone,

I have a 1997 Maxima GXE and lately I have been hearing a lot of chirping sounds coming from the front end while I am driving. It happens when I'm going over bumps sometimes, and even when I am just driving on a smooth road. It has been occurring more and more often lately. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Thanks

Check the condition of the suspension and then do a basic 'bounce' check. If Ok, noise may be coming from the engine compartment. You may need a mechanic's stethoscope to isolate the problem. You can buy it from Sears or HarborFreight ($20 or less).

I pushed the front end down with my hands a few times and I hear the chirping sound when I do that. So I'm guessing it is a suspension problem, any idea how much stock front suspension goes for?

You'll have to narrow it down (which unfortunately may be difficult considering the number of components) to get an idea of what you might be looking at, price-wise. It's probably a bad bushing somewhere...but there are a lot of bushings to check. My first guess would be the upper strut bushing.

For a 12-year old car, if you have the original suspension components, then they are way overdue. I have done suspension work before but nowadays, just let the shop do it for me. It's a dangerous job, the springs in particular. So if you haven't done it before, just leave it to the pro. Each OEM strut, at a discounted from IoS costs $128. Depending on the number of parts to be replaced, it's going to be $500 or more.

If you have a friend who does suspension job, he can use the procedure from the Maxima/I30?I35 FAQ 'sticky'
