Used a small 3 jaw puller to try to pull the crank pulley off instead of a large one...f*** me. The front lip of the pulley now has 2 small chips where the two jaws on the puller were.

Now, I know these are precision balanced and all...but would the pulley be alright to reuse or should I not risk it? The weight and size of the chips are nothing in comparison to the overall weight and size of the whole pulley itself, but like everything else on this car, you just never know and cant be granted the littlest slack.

Was considering just sourcing a unit from the junk yard, but ended up coming across this topic...not sure if it is completely true or not, but if the pulleys are precision matched to each individual motor, I guess I am up s*** creek without a paddle.

I would use a small file and smooth the edges, re-install and hope for the best.

How hard is it to re balance the pulley to the engine internals if one wanted to do it?

If the "chips" are really small, I wouldnt worry about it,file them smooth and re-use. If it really bothers you, source a new pully and remove weights from old pully and install in new pully in same spots......this was mentioned in your linked post.

Yea, there are two chips in the outter most lip where the alternator belt rides. I will get some pictures when it is a bit lighter outside. They are maybe 1/2 inch long each, if that.

It doesnt bother me much, but I just dont want to throw off the balance of things and ruin my engine.

I bought my car in 2006 with two 1 inch chips on the crank pulley and I was worried that it might damage the belts but it's been spinning just fine for 6 years with those chips, no noticeable engine imbalance. It should be fine. I always wondered what might have caused those chips and now I realize that the last owner may have had work done, the crank pulley was removed and chipped in the removal process.

I don't know... The perfectionist in me says to replace it, but it's awefully tempting to file those rough edges down and let it go. I don't know that the gains from replacing it outweigh the possible balance issues from using a different pulley.

I'd reuse it in a heartbeat as long as the grooves for the belts are not damaged. Ofcourse if I happened across another one in perfect condition, I would swap them and save the old one with the chips for a rainy day... (I've had this situation with a KA24 I've played with... used my chipped one to replace one a junkyard damaged on a motor we bought)

None of the grooves are damaged at all....I will file the edges and reuse it and see what happens. Probably nothing noticeable

Mine looks worse and still works. I never even bothered to file it down since I got the car that way.
