I just got my new(used) transmission today from the mainland. I noticed a chip in the metal right next to where the axle seal sits. I have a picture of it below, the red thing in the middle is just a plastic plug. Should this interfere with the seal? I just paid $175 to get it shipped here on top of the price of the transmission itself. Should I go ahead and install it, or will I just be wasting my time and maybe more importantly right now, my money?

I can't really tell by the picture, but does the seal go further back than the chip? If so, you should be ok. If the back edge of the seal is exposed, then it will leak.

Well the crack kind of runs right along the top of the seal. There is kind of a small lip that holds the seal from squeezing out I guess, and it seems that this lip is what cracked off. I haven't seen the transmission since I took the picture, but that is what it seemed like to me.

I have attached a picture with a red mark running along the "lip" and the crack left without the mark. You can see the top of the seal because of the crack, not really the back. If something were pushed up against it, it seems that it would be fine. Does anything push against this entire seal, or does the axle just run throuh the center? From that crude description, do you think that it will leak? If so, what can I do to fix it???

There is a metal band in the seal that provides tension on the axle to prevent leaking. The seal itself fits very snugly into the transmission. As I said before, as long as the seal goes in further than the chip, you should be ok. The only possible problem I can think of would be the seal deforming while trying to install it into the transmission.

So I contacted the yard that I bought the transmission from. They told me that they will send a replacement if another car like mine comes in.

So I have to decide whether I want to chance this one or not. How many hours would be involved in a transmission swap (stock to stock)?
