I'm looking for a reputable place to have some work done in the Chicago area. Starting with a new HU - thinking about the Alpine 9886 but not sure how it will look in the dash. I've replaced the rear speakers with Kappa 6X9's and considering a component set up front. Any recommendations would help.

The 9886 is a good unit. I've seen a bunch of good things about it, and I've been totally happy with my current Alpine HU and my previous Alpine HU.

As far as install goes, do it yourself. It's cheaper and a HU install really isn't that difficult. Doc wrote up an excellent tutorial on how to do this (check the FAQ, it's linked in there). Worst case, I can give you a hand if you need it. If there's a weekend that I'm relatively free, I'd be more that willing to help you out (seeing as I'm from the Chi-town area as well).

Thanks, I had a feeling you were going to say that. I think I could handle the HU but installing components in the doors are another story.

The wiring is probably the hardest part. Our cars are relatively simple to take apart, so that's easy. It's just a matter of getting the wires where they need to go and then mounting the speakers. The job isn't too tough, and it's always a good idea to learn. That way you can replace/fix as needed without having to go back to a shop!
