NESCONSET, N.Y. - Sean Beaudoin, 25, has an autism spectrum disorder, but with help, he has become fairly independent.

He has his own car. He works 20 hours a week as a kennel assistant. He has a credit card in his name, although his mother keeps it. And he has a good credit rating.

But his parents, Curtis and Paula Beaudoin, recently experienced the downside of such autonomy for their son, who lives with them in Nesconset.

Last month, Sean walked into Hustedt Chevrolet in Centereach and traded in his fully paid 1997 Ford Explorer for a $2,500 credit toward a 2002 Chevy Malibu with 50,000 miles. He owed an additional $11,400 on the Malibu.
This car is worth $5000 max... if the sun hits it just right and the moon and stars are in perfect alignment.

So, no law was broken but the dealership refused to reverse the deal after learning about the man's condition and only marked it down to $8500, which is two grand more than its exceedingly generous Kelly Blue Book retail value in mint condition.

Also: The dealership tried to sue the family for $10m for defamation, and they lost their GM franchise a while ago.

Hope the community is smart enough to hurt the dealer where it counts. When NO ONE shows up in the showroom for a week, it'll start to hurt a lot more than the loss of a few thousand dishonest dollars.

I certainly hope their regular service department customers do the same thing. Maybe some little shop in town can benefit from more business at the same time.

Similiar thing happened up here:

http://www.thestar.com/business/article ... 5-000?bn=1

Mazda interevened and cancelled the franchise agreement. The ownership group received a huge fine.

The Salesman lost his license to sell new/used vehicles in Ontario.

The victim at the end ended up with a new car with no payments.

wait for the revolution when people that do such things like that can be taken out and shot.

or let it go viral and let the media catch wind of it.

helping out someone being taken advantage of beats the hell out of all the other s*** they air on news networks.

This is tough. At first, I agreed with PMQ and that the whole deal would get thrown out. But the guy is not retarded. Autistic people often have high IQ's and cognitive abilities. Even if the dealer couldnt tell he was autistic, the deal could get thrown out. But the guy's not crazy or incompetent.

With that said, when this dealer goes 3 months without seeing a customer, maybe they'll reconsider.

That blog post is almost 3 years old.
What has happened since then? Jesda, I'm confused by your follow-up regarding the law suit and the loss of the GM franchise. Was their franchise lost before or after this happened?

The loss of franchise had nothing to do with the incident. It was part of the normal GM dealer network downsizing. Another dealer in town gave the guy a free 2008 Malibu. Apparently the owner or manager of the competing dealership had an autistic cousin or brother so he empathized.

The dealership that tried to rip off the autistic guy is still in business selling Korean cars. I'm wondering now what happened to the defamation suit. I'll assume it was dropped, but I'm not sure.

Wow, hats off to that other dealer. Good PR is where you find it.

Razi, I look to you to get the Korean mafia to come down on this guy's business license like Kim Jong Il hitting an NPR reporter.
