Jack up the back end and spin a tire. If the other spins the same way, you probably have an LSD.
Go around a corner very fast and hit the throttle suddenly, if the inside tire breaks loose you don't have an LSD.
Look on the idfferential itself for an orange sticker that says VLSD.
Pour bleach under one rear tire and try to accelerate suddenly and quickly. If you go forward quickly you have an LSD, if not the one tire the bleach is under will spin.
None of these methods rule out the fact that it does not have LSD. The results can occur with and with LSD.
Here's the best way short of opening the case:
Lift the rear. Lock the driveshaft by putting it in gear(In park if it's an automatic). The, using your hands, try and rotate one of the rear wheels. If it's an open diff, it will rotate wite relative ease. The only resistance will be the weight of the wheels and the axles. If you spin it fast, it should slow down somewhat progressively. If you have a VLSD, the wheel will be much harder to turn. And you likely won't be able to spin it fast enough to check how long it takes to slow down. Both an open diff and VLSD will spin the opposite tire in the opposite direction with the driveshaft locked. Locking the driveshaft will force the spider gears to have to be used and in the case of a VLSD, it will force you to have to try to turn through the resistance the viscous coupling provides. The resistance will be quite noticable. If you are in doubt, you probably don't have it.
I've stated this many many times. And yet, methods that end with results that can occur with open diffs and VLSD's are posted. It's just not a very scientific approach to proving anything. Any decent scientist will prove a theory by ruling out variables so that the only variable left will be the one that will prove the theory. The orange sticker is probably a good sign, but it's always apossibility that someone stuck it there...though very highly unlikely.
As far as not having a VLSD unless the owner installed it, why? HICAS models came with it from the factory. It's possible he does have one...
As far as the car squatting and hauling ***, I had a 91 with an open diff that I could launch with minimal wheelspin. And it did not do the peg-leg. It was a base model and I know for sure it had no LSD.
