Alright, my friend says that ABS is better if you have it because when you break really hard at a track event then you wont lose control. But another guy told me that ABS is bad because you want to lock up your tires so that you can transfer weight at the tracks. Sorry for being a Noob but I am just confused so which do you guys think is better to have? With or without ABS? Is it worth it or no?

Abs is a complete waste of space and weight IMO if you have good driving skills. Threshold braking will get the job done just as well.

Depends on what you're using the car for and how good you are at threshold braking. Your girlfriend's little 4 door compact should have ABS. Your track car should not.

I was watching this thing on the discovery channels on motorcycles with abs, and they said 60-0 distance decreased 9feet over professional drivers without ABS...i know it's a motorcycle...but still..9ft is alot.

In some areas (like chess) computers have the upper hand over humans, braking your car is one of those. Even if you got mad skillz you'll still decrease your braking distance with ABS (especially in wet or slippery conditions), take a look at some Best Motoring tests done by professional drivers. As for locking up your tires so that you can transfer weight at the track, that sounds like BS, the weight is transferred to the front by braking(decelerating) not by locking your front tires.

Definitely keep your ABS.

I would have to disagree with you NoMuken... In some occasions where the computer may have the upper hand on ABS... There are sometimes where it engages when it doesn't need to be. Especially in wet conditions where you mayb hit your brakes for a few seconds and thats it. And when it comes to cornering... From what i remember and correct me if i'm wrong.. but the way ABS works is there are sensors on each of the tires telling the computer how fast each one is spinning. When the brakes are slammed on and the ABS kicks in. The computer reads the speed of each tire and pulses the brakes so that if there is any change in speed of the tires. the brakes will lock them and unlock them so that they spin at the same time... enhancing the traction and avoiding a possible spin. Now when it comes to taking sharp turns and needing to slam your brakes. IMO I would think in theory ABS would cause a spin for the fact that always the inner tire spins faster then the outer one. And if abs kicks in. Say byebye. I would have to say take it off or disengage it Fuse wise. I don't have it on my car and i seem to handle it pretty well when the need arises for heavy braking.

RacinDa240sx,

I'm trying to follow your argument, but I don't understand this part:Quote »Now when it comes to taking sharp turns and needing to slam your brakes. IMO I would think in theory ABS would cause a spin for the fact that always the inner tire spins faster then the outer one[/quote] When you race you don't slam your brake in a sharp turn, you do your heavy braking before the turn. In a turn the outer tire rotates faster, why would ABS cause the car to spin out?

p.s. here a description of how ABS workshttp://auto.howstuffworks.com/anti-lock-brake.htm

I'm not sayin in a race just in general.. Like an emergency or something i would think that if ABS depending on what model ABS you have.. were to pulse the tires.. and ya bout the faster spinning tire your right I meant the outer... Umm if it was to pulse the brakes and both tires are spinning at a different speed... and its slippery road.. that would throw your vehicle into a spin for the fact that if your in a turn and ABS pulses the brakes one tire is gonna lock up before the other tire for the fact that the computer sees 2 different speeds on the tires. .. But thats just in my opinion... let me know if that isn't right..

ABS has saved my life more than a few times. It progressively brakes better and faster than manually pumping the pedal ever could.

A.B.S. prevents each individual wheel from locking up when you slam on the brakes = greatly reduced stopping distances. It does nothing while cornering, unless your slamming your brakes while cornering. In which case without it you will be turning your wheel all the way, but your tires will be locked up skidding. Your car will continue to travel straight instead of turning. With it, not only will you make that corner going faster than your supposed to. You won't die skidding off a cliff. Pump yer brakes!! Nothing can do that faster than a computer. The only draw back with a.b.s is that it doesn't give the driver that total and complete feeling of control that we need. Even if we can't handle it. My advice is try it before you dis it!! I like non a.b.s. It shows how crappy a driver I am and how I must improve my skills.

I had ABS on my 92 S13. . I don't on my 97 S14. .

my opinion: I DON'T miss it. . I think I only ever used it when the roads were icy, and even then, it didn't make any difference. . pump your brakes and use threshold braking. .
