ok...i took my car in to a place to finally get my transmission changed and well wouldnt u know it. the transmission was fixed but my engine is finally going. I picked it up on wednesday and got 5 BLOCKS to find out that the timing is all fuked up. i finally got it to drive to a diff shop after about an hour of the car spitting and sputtering and backfiring all over. i had the shop check it out and he tell me that the long timing chainguard is prolly broken and that is whats causing the timing to be messed up and its gonna be like 16+ labor hours to fix it. PULLING off the head and god knows finding what else wrong with the engine.

so now im forced to buy a beater crap car and try to store this one till i can find money to get an RB. this is coming real close. I have an old man that i bought this car from who sells cars for supplemental income. He said he would sell me another with like no money down. WHICH is good then i can take what money i have and use it on the 240.

my only problem is that ive never done a swap so im still worried i dont know what im getting myself into.

No timing chain on RB's. Therefore, I doubt seriously that there is such thing as a long timing chainguard.

Not to talk you out of an RB, I love mine!!, but have you considered SR20 or CA18. The SR20 drops right in and everything just hooks right up, with some wiring mods.

I did my RB25DET swap by myself with very limited knowledge, but a lot of determination. It is really not that bad if you buy mounts/custom driveshaft and pay someone to do the wiring. Only issue is that I have probably spent about 6K so far (not counting the car), and I want so much more.

The RB20 option would be cheaper, but it really all depends on what your goals are. if you have the car and only 3K, the SR20 will probably make you plenty happy. There is plenty of aftermarket support for it, so you can always make it faster later.

This is all my opinion, and I wouldn't give up my RB25 for anything other than a RB26, but look around and you will see that most people spent alot more than 3K with their RB swap.

the problem with power is that it imediately makes everything else in the car feel week. I couldn't resist getting an LSD to help with my wheel spin (1st, second and into third gear), and since they also had the koyo radiator, I got that too.

Traded my old KA motor and 200bucks for a front mount intercooler, but now I need piping. Then I will want:coiloverswheels/tiresnew clutchbig brakes

You get the idea.

Good luck with whatever you choose!!

true...but i havent seen a SR20 for under 2000 shipped. also the CA18 sounds like it might work for me if i can find one cheap. the reason i picked the RB20 is that it is one of the cheaper motors and the best power upgrade for my car. i can prolly get a RB20 shipped for prolly almost 1700. IF anyone can do better ...im all ears!!!

I'm about to order an Rb20 myself and I'd rather not pay ~$2000 shipped from Venus. WHere are you getting 1700 shipped from? And anythign lower would be much appreciated. :D

whoa whoa whoa , back the truck up! Long guide broken , 16+ hours to fix!?! Are you taking it to a blind technician. First off a broken guide would make a lot of noise. It wouldn't be throwing your timing that off that much either. Sputtering and missing? To many options - cap , rotor , wires , fuel filter , fuel pump , sticky injector(s). Do you know if they checked any of those under 50 dollar fixes. C'mon now, you payed for a trans swap , now you want to shelve you car over a miss? You don't need to take the head off to change a guide. For the money your going to pay for a beater , you could just go to the dealer and find out what is really wrong with a good car. YOURS!!

Note: when buying rb20det's ask what turbo is on it. If it is a "nissan 16v 10" go for it... that is the BB one. If it has a "nissan 16v 12" that is a good bargaining tool…

For 3k you could build a killer CA, and have parts in the States to fix it. If you want an RB... that's a different story.

Sounds like a scam to me... Who would not want everyone to know they were selling something good at a good price?
