Figured I'd post a link in here so ya'll can see what I've done in the past with my old car. I posted some picts of mods I did in the "other cars" forum page. I'd like to do the flip-flop trunk mod to my I35, but Im not sure if its possible. Look at my picts and tell me what ya think...

Don't mean any offense, but I never liked the 3rd gen Taurus/Sable one bit.At least the DOHC made acceptable power. The styling was definitely NOT my cup of tea. The Sable's a little better, though, thanks to the non-oval rear window and less stupid looking lights.

I didn't like the interior design at all, either. The center pod-thingy was very poorly designed and looked dumb to boot.

I can't figure out why Ford still did 60's style trunk lids (with no low cutout) until 1999. HUGE PITA if you're trying to transport anything remotely heavy or big.

I imagine someone makes the flip trunk arm kit for your I. The one on the Sable kind of looks like an air brake at the angle it sits.

2 Things:

1) The "center pod-thingy" is affectionately called the "oval of doom" by Taurus/Sable owners who have them.

2) The only reason I was even able to do the trunk mod to the Sable was because the trunk lift rods (the part that looks like an air brake) are exposed. In some cars they're mounted between the sheets of metal that make up the trunk lid. (Yea, it may look a bit ricey, but I liked it because no one else did it.)

It would look fine... if it wasn't for the crappy tail lights and body kit and whatnot.

Awesome.

So what do you do if you want to install and aftermarket head unit in that thing? Are Taurus/Sable owners even worse off than I30 owners looking for trim pieces?

The Taurus/Sable with the oval of doom can either have electronic climate control (like I had) or analog controls (the typical 3 temp, fan, and AC knobs). If you had the analog controls there's a stereo install kit that is so easy to install it makes me sick. On the other hand, if you had the electronic controls, not only was there no kit, but no way to switch to the analog climate knobs to install the one and only kit offered.

I went as far as to hack up my oval of doom. I took the face off, ripped off the stereo and covered the whole top half with bondo/ fiberglass (where the stereo controls were). Then I cut a hole for an aftermarket HU. Whole thing was a mess so I gave up... and had to buy a new oval thing.

Ford's manual climate controls are the worst on earth. I HATE them. So backward. Why the HELL is the "off" position on the MODE knob instead of the fan speed knob? Drove me freaking nuts in my Ford. And they STILL do it that way to this day.
