I pulled the motor out on sunday and snapped some pics of the damage. It was pretty bad, Im going to have another post soon with all my parts for sale, here are the pics.

It was caused by a bent rod eventually breaking. I had posted a while back that the timing chain broke and I had slight contact with the valves. I replaced the head but never checked out the bottom end. It guess it had tweaked the rod a bit and 3k miles later this happened. This was on a fresh rebuild that cost me over 2K but things like this happen so Im over it already.

ya its like a grenade went off in the engine. But you shouldtn worry about the motor. This was a mistake on my behalf and my shops, so if its done right things like this wont happen. Most of the damage happened because when the rod snapped I was at around 3k rpm and in gear so it slung it around the block a couple hundred times untill in stoped.

Wow, that's a helluva hole...it took a lot of force to do that in an iron block!

Anyway, would you mind taking a close up picture of where the dipstick tube goes into the hole in the block?

Thanks...

The block is in the trash bin already. But if you can make it out from the pics the oil return on the oil pan was in a perfect position.

Nevermind, I just saw a good picture of it...strange, wouldn't it make sense that the flat washer looking thing that's welded to the dip stick tube sit flush on the edge of the hole in the block? Mine came back from the shop the same way, but it was lose in the hole...so I sanded mine down a little bit, and froze it so it'd go in a little firther toward the swaged top and have a better fit....

That sucks man. At least there was a good reason for what happened, instead of not being sure.

from the pic, is the con rod empty inside??

looks like it is empty, wow, i thought they were full metal, but then weight at 7000rpm; but then again compresive and tensile forces at 7000rpm.

Am i seeing right, it is empty inside??

^^^ They aren't empty, not too sure what YOU are looking at. The rods have a groove in the middle of them, maybe you are seeing that.

ya they are actually a nice beefy rods for a econo 4 banger. They are not hollow, but the one pictured is pretty mangeled so it looks a bit thin.
