Okay i spent $380 ordering the chainguide kit from Joe, and take off the front cover tonight. The guides are already fully metal backed. The sealant is a light blue around the cover. The guides also look slightly different than the ones i bought from joe.

Attaching a much smaller pic of my guides, as they came from the factory.

This car has 128k miles, has had dealership oil changes for the first 100k, and the guy i bought it from had a lot of stuff done at the dealer as well. But there is no dealer record of the chainguides. My production date is 10/92, VIN JNKG01C2AM224026.

So...is this further proof that 'some' 93s come with the updated guides?

Also, the oil pump chain seems to have a good deal of slack and the sproket just spins freely on the crankshaft. Whats up with that?On the left chain slack side there seems to be some slack there as well, not quite enough to really worry me but there is slack there. The other chains are tense.

The original problem with my car, that prompted me to do the chainguides, was a strange rotational rattling kind of noise. Sounded just like i had a piece of a guide rubbing the chain but thats clearly not the case. This engine doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil, gets good mpg and emissions. But it had a funny noise so i figured i had to do the guides.

Well you can get your money back, and you tried to do right by your baby too !

The oil pump sprocket is held in place by tension from the big bolt through the balancer. Makes you want to stand on a ten foot bar to snug it up doesn't it?

Yes, seriously.

Wow, you're lucky and I bet you're happy!

However, whats up with the guide bolt I have circled in yellow? Is it stripped, or is it just discolored, or???

For reals the oil pump sprocket is only held in by the crank bolt? thats makes me nervous. It pleases me to see how clean the engine is under the cover, its a very light golden color. This one was oil changed for sure.

that is just a discoloration, and an effect of trying to get the pic small enough to post up.

I've decided to sell the kit here for $300 shipped, to avoid having to RMA to Everythinginfiniti and pay restocking. zerothread?id=117081 is my thread in the infiniti parts section. Great deal for someone who actually needs the parts.

Have the dealer retorque the bolt on the crank pulley just to be on the safe side. Its nice to see people are taking on chain guides as a DIY and saving these gems!

Now you can rev to the redline without worry.

Joe will take them back if unopened without restocking fee, you pay shipping back.

But we still don't know if the guides were factory or dealer installed for certain.

The metal on those guides almost looks too clean to be factory installed. When did you get your car dareo?

True it is, but no need to be nervous. As long as it's torqued to no less than 270ft lbs. then you'll be ok. I remember Jesda telling me that he had a problem with his oil pressure (?) because the crank pulley (aka harmonic balancer) wasn't torqued to 270ft lbs. So that's the importance of it.

I also wish to remark how clean your engine looks under front cover. This means the rest of your engine is likely clean as well.

I was going to comment on that as well Fred!

It looks really clean in there...

More proof that some 93s get the good guides, but dont let this not verify..

Very clean engine... looks as good as mine at 47K when we replaced my guides. I think I would go ahead and replace the oil pump chain... they are known for stretching. Might as well replace the tensioners too...

What color was the RTV on the front cover? I suspect that those guides were from the factory if you don't see mention of them in the dealer service records. You would have probably heard about guides if someone actually paid to have them replaced...

RTV was light blue. This car has an extensive dealership service record. I don't think anything was done outside the dealer untill the guy i bought it from got it at about 100k. And he didn't do the guides, he said it was probably new enough to not need them. I've had the car since 120k, or about 8 months.
