check engine sign....how to get rid of it

hey i just got my 240sx and the lady said the check engine sign has been there for as long as she can remember and so how do i get rid of it? should i just have a mechanic look at it or is this something me and my friends can handle?thanks

Depends, if you feel confident pulling the codes and fixing it yourself then do it yourself. If you have no idea what you are doing just let a good shop fix it.
