So i started my car today and notice the check engine light was on - went to autozone and had it checked - came up with a error for the GAS CAP?!?!?! :ohno: Anyone heard of this before? I called the stealership and asked if they heard that before and it boggled their mind too. Should i go to another autozone or oreilly to get a 2nd opinion?

Autozone guy did say that it could be possible the seal ring could cause a leak and pressure releasing from the tank? Is that even possible for it to throw a check engine light?

Things I have done:
Never filled with engine on - of course (afraid to blow myself up)
always tighten cap after done filling with 3 clicks as recommended - yeah i am a bit of a follower on instructions

Anyone have any ideas?

Entirely possible that the gas cap seal wore out. In Cali you can fail smog testing due to the gas cap (as stupid as it sounds)... it's an emissions control device which prevents fuel vapors from leaving the tank. The cheapest thing would be to try on a new gas cap.

So i went to another autozone to see if i can get the following reading :

Evap purge solenoid faulty
Canister vent solenoid faulty
Blocked vapor canister
Faulty evap pressure sensor
Loose or defective fuel cap

Anyone have any ideas?

If the light is gone, that could simply mean something is loose, intermittent, or on it's way to permanent failure. Still have the issue checked out, especially since you already have the code.

What did the check engine light look like?? I had a "service engine soon" light come on and I didn't get a chance to drive to AutoZone in time before in a couple of days it went off!! I had just hit 70k miles and thought maybe the computer was programmed for this since powertrain warranty goes our at 70k. :gotme

Without looking into the code, it does sound like a loose gas cap to me. Any chance someone else filled it up? Any chance that there was sediment or something on the seal that came off at the next fill-up (allowing it to seal properly again)? The relevant error doesn't show up immediately even if you drive without the gas cap, and similarly, it doesn't clear immediately once you put the gas cap back on. It could have been something else leaking in the evap control system (like a tube to a charcoal canister, or a charcoal canister), but I wouldn't worry about it until/unless the light comes on again.

the light is orange and it comes on your temp gauge. it says "service engine soon"

But nobody drives my car but me. I don't think it is the gas cap anymore could be something else. My only logical reasoning for that is because i filled up gas the other day and the light was still on until i drove it to pretty close to a quarter of the tank down that the light when off. I am going to drive it around for a few days and see what happens.

I do have an appointment on friday with the stealership so I'll see whats going on . Good thing for the Elite Warranty!

As weird as it seems, I have been pumping 93 octane fuel for the life of the car but this one time, I was at the pump and saw regular unleaded at under $3.00 and just said "what the heck"!! The next day light came on and went off when gas had gone down to about half a tank!! Nothing since that incident last month... :gotme

i have had this problem before .. it could be that. u didnt seal the gas cap correctly it happens . it says in the owner's manual that if gas cap is not closed properly that the check engine light will come on. if it has gone off the problem could be rectified.

It says right on the gas cap....."tighten cap until it clicks or the check engine may come on" My cap says that anyway.

I'm having the same problem, but tightening the cap did not help. I bought a new gas cap and that did not help either. Have been driving for a week with the new gas cap. Autozone read my code and gave the same error and possible causes that you listed above.

I had the same code come up a couple months ago, but this was after sitting with the car idling for a long period of time.
I just reset the light and waited to see if it would come back... it's been fine ever since.
The car actually runs stronger than ever lately with the cooler climate.

altM35 - How did you reset the light? We had the same problem with our 2006 QX56 - the gas cap seal was old and set the light off. Needs to be reset.
Thx!

Before I bought one of these:

I kept the battery unplugged overnight. I hated having everything reset, so I bought the above and use my phone to read codes and clear them.
