On and then off is generally a not too important issue but that on/off cycle can hide 2nd out trips and these are saved within another memory and are possible to be hidden from that on/off MIL light.
I strongly urge you to get your own ODB II reader. You may not know what the codes mean but there are books, this site that indicates each code. But that knowledge is a double edged sword, because the fault always a code has more meaning. The best way to learn these codes and their meaning is by learning the operation of an internal combustion engine with its many systems that rely upon sequencing of each individually and in total.
If you feel that is too much then post your readings, someone will respond.
With cars of today and with Do it yourselfers, trying to save money, do it right and learn, there are a few diagnostic tools that help, that cost money and will save you grief. But you must learn how to use these tools safely and understand what they are telling you.
Besides hand tools, impact air tools, you will need a good not cheap multimeter. A good timing light. A vacuum and pressure gauge.
With this combination you are set to fix that vehicle but be sure to learn how to use these tools.
There are much more but starting off takes commitment money and time, lots of time.
GOOD LUCK!
