what year is your car? if its obd-1 you can put the computer in diagnostic mode to check it, if its obd II advance auto will pull the code for free.

The ECU is located on the right of the passenger side foot-well. you have to take the small plastic panel off to get to it should be one screw in the back on on the side and one screw is on part of the door trim (just have to take one off).

After you get the panel off you'll see the ecu. unscrew the ecu from the the car should be 2 or 3 screws holding it on. now carefully flip the ecu around without twisting up your harness. You will now be looking at the front of your ecu, depending on if it is a California or federal car your ecu will have a small cutout with 1 or 2 signal lamps. (the California models have 2).

Your ECU has 5 modes, the mode you are looking for is, Self Diagnostic Mode, MODE 3. You will now need to turn your ignition to ON position (Dont start your car up), you will need a small screw driver that will fit in the into the idle adjustment screw that is located right next to the indicator lamps. you are going to turn the screw FULLY clock wise till it don't turn no more, *BUT REMEMBER WHERE THE SCREW ORIGINALLY WAS* mark it with a pen or pencil or something.

The indicator lights will now start flashing once the screw has been turned clock wise. both lights will flash (unless yours is not a California model) Once then a pause, Twice then a pause, 3 times then a pause. and so on... you want to turn the screw back to its original position once the lights have flashed 3 times in a row, don't worry if you've missed it, it will cycle through them again.

congrats your now in self diagnostic mode. codes are indicated be number of times red and green lamps flash. Red lamp is for the first digit and Green lamp is for the second digit.

so if red blinks once and green blinks twice your throwing a code 12, get it? All codes will repeat until the ignition is turned off. *WATCH OUT FOR MULTIPLE CODES, SOMETIMES THERE ARE MORE THAN ONE CODE* "just watch to see if it repeating the same code or different ones"

CODES

11 Crank angle sensor circuit12 Air flow meter circuit13 Engine temperature sensor circuit14 Vehicle speed sensor circuit21 Ignition signal missing in primary coil31 E.C.U. 32* EGR function33 Exhaust gas O2 sensor circuit35* Exhaust gas temperature ciruit43 Throttle position sensor circuit45* Injector leak55 NO malfunction

You need a NISSAN 1 or 2 connector and a snap-on "brick" scanner. There is another way to check them if you short something out and you count the flashes, but I've never done it that way. If you can get the scanner you can do some pretty neat stuff with it.

Some more info would be good.

ive been checking mine that way alot since hardly anybody carries scanners for these years 240's anymore. thats how they say to check it in the service manual anyways so im pretty sure its safe. I believe there is a way to set it to diagnostic mode and leave it while attempting to turn the car on making the engine light blink the codes instead. but i just stick with what i know.

Whooooooow thats way too much information to compute. We dont have telepathy , whats the car doing? What did your friends do to it? Your not giving us anything we can use. What color is the car?

From the info you gave us this is what i've come up with....................1. You have a 89 coupe2. The check engine light is on3. You have no idea what to do4. You have friends that shouldnt be around cars

Now tell me how can anyone figure out what is wrong with the info given?
