I am helping my neigbour fixing his 95 altima automatic. The problem it has is, the speedometer sometimes works sometimes doesn't. When it's not working, the engine light will come on and it has little hesitation problem. I am thinking it's the VSS going out. I want to make sure my assumption is correct. So, I want to run a diagnostic code check before changing out the VSS. I opened up the kick panel on the passenger side, I found the ECU doesn't have the diagnostic screw.

My question is how do you guys get the trouble code out of the car? I don't have the hand held reader.

Also, where is exactly the VSS located? I know it should be on the transmission somewhere.

Thanks in advance

If you have a 96 or newer you need to also pass SRT moniters as part of the smog test. This means the code that was set by the system self test will have to be resolved before you can smog it. What yr is your car and what code is it storing.
