Check Engine Light - How to enable?

I've got one of those models that is not equipped with a check engine light. There are 5 indicator lights on the bottom left cluster, but only 3 are being used: gas, wiper fluid and cruise. The other 2 lights are blank, I believe they are for ABS (if equipped) and check engine.

I removed the cluster last week and saw that there wasn't a bulb in the indicator where the check engine light would be. If I placed a bulb in that spot, would I have a functioning check engine light? Or is my vehicle not equipped to do so.
