The car has 228,000 on it. New injectors were installed at 188,000.

I just read about Costco gas. I'm Costco about 70% of the time.

Yesterday my engine light came on. I ran over to the dealer to have it dyno'd. ($120) They found open injector code, 7 of my 8 injectors were not performing. They recommended new injectors. After I told them I'd pay the $120 and go to my independent they said maybe a cleaning may temporarely fix the problem.

My first impression was the dealer was trying to rip me off.

My goal is to keep the car another couple of years. Maybe 20,000 more miles.

Any suggestions on repair?

Any suggestions on gas? <<boy, I wish I read that 3 years ago about Costco!

Thank you all.

Doug

Check out the how-to article on http://www.q45.org for ohm testing the injectors. It is likely that all of the stations in your area are using E10 fuels now - but I would ask. Different states have different requirements as far as labeling at the pump.

I think it's highly unlikely that 7 injectors are bad, but with prior exposure to MTBE in CA, who knows? The ohm test will tell you a lot.

I've always used Costco. In WA, MTBE, but no side effects. In Austin, no ethanol so far.

Heath, is this the one: "Checking Fuel Injector Resistance - 1990-1996 Q45. How to check for possible injector failure."

Thanks, Doug

But also get yourself a couple cans of BG 44K and run one through the tank, preferably at highway speeds. Your injectors may just need a good cleaning. 44k is the tits.

Maybe back in 2004 BG44k was a powerful cleaner.....but no more, as they castrated it by removing the active ingrediant{PEA}..... much better results can be had for less money using Redline SI-1 or Techron brands.......all revealed on their MSDS sheets what they are made with, and what they no longer contain

Baffled how everyone here keeps touting BG44k without doing their homework to see that it is nowhere near the product it once was- same with Valvolene synthetic brake fluid......new formula has lowered wet boiling point as compared to a few years ago

I'm aware of the posts regarding BG's new weaker 44K formula, but IIRC Techron only had like a tenth of the active ingredient of 44K.

Does Redline have more of it than 44K now?

The point is, the injectors may only be dirty, not failing.

Luckily formulations sold at discount autoparts stores and service stations won't do much harm, just as they may do little to compensate for 10-20 years of owner abuse.

If you don't pay "A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL SURCHARGE" it is unlikely to be as effective as many expect.
