Check engine code P2096 - downstream oxygen sensor

In 2014, the G37 Sedan became Infiniti Q50. G37 Coupe and Convertible became Infiniti Q60 under Infiniti's new naming structure - Here's the place to discuss the Q50 and Q60!

2015 Q50 - check engine light came on out of the blue, code is P2096, post catalyst fuel system bank 1. From what I searched online, this car has 2 O2 sensors, my question is can I just clean the downstream sensor and reset the computer?

Car seems to drive OK, but for a while it seemed that now and then, it's sluggish when I step on it. Like it'll take a couple seconds for the engine and transmission to catch up..

The other option is to obviously install a new sensor. Any suggestions?

P2096 is basically a "performance" code for the whole bank, and there are lots of possible causes besides the HO2S (rear O2). The ECM basically computes what voltage it should be seeing at the rear O2 based on air volume, fuel trim, and A/F (front O2) readings. if the real result differs too much from the computation, it throws a performance code. P2096, P2097, P2098 and P2099 all fall into that category. P2096 specifically means the rear O2 is indicating leaner than the computation predicts. Here's the list of possible causes from the manual (not in order of likelihood):

• A/F sensor 1 (bank 1)
• A/F sensor 1 heater
• Heated oxygen sensor 2 (bank 1)
• Fuel pressure
• Fuel injector
• Intake air leaks
• Exhaust gas leaks

Because it's a performance code and not flatline, the cause can be very difficult to track down. However, most of the ones we've seen were either from vacuum or exhaust leaks or bad A/F sensos, not bad HO2S's.

Thank you, this is very helpful.. So basically even if I were to install a new one, the root cause may not be addressed/resolved.. I'll reset the CEL, see if it comes back and then go from there.
