guys i'm sorry if this has been talked about latley, but i have a 91 240sx and latley i've been trying to drift alot in empty parking lots, and i really want an lsd, but i don't realy have the money to get those expensive Kaaz ones and stuff, what are some cheap alternatives. I think i read before about people using 300zx ones, and j30 ones? but i'm not sure, if anyone has any info or a link or something i would greatly appreciate it. or even if they have one or know where i can get one for cheap.thnx in advance

R32 GTST J30Z32 N/a S13 w/ HICAS S14 w/ ABS

Generally your best bets for LSD's... depending on year, etc. you will need to swap out some components.

Clutch type LSD

More aggressive lock-up

I'd suggest a 2 way.

my 2 cents:

i have a 95 vlsd in my car, i autoX and trying to learn how to drift. it was great on street tires, powerslide out of a corner and able to do donuts. but now i think that it is wearing down because of the azenis sport tires. i couldn't even do donuts with them on, the vlsd wasn't locking up.

a month ago at a autoX practice event i let a friend drive my car while i was in the passenger seat. (National championship under his belt and he know how to drift.) DAMN i was F *C k'in impressed. he drifted on my car on a long right hander. i was like "holy she-it!!!" when he got out of the car, he was surprised that i only had a stock vlsd.

so my point : if your not going to do alot of drifting, then go with a vlsd. you can find them for about $300-400. then go get some used tires and sign up for a drift event (alot safer)

because an aftermarket lsd is going to cost around $800-$1000. my brother has a cusco rs type lsd ($1000) and it is freakin amazing. it locks up nice and he could play around the throttle more, on mine i have to push harder to stay locked up.

hoped this helped......

i would like to get something in the 300-400 dollar area, is anything in this price range an lsd? i would also like to keep the final gear drive the same, i remember reading that the j30 had a lower ratio. also are any of the ones that Nismo_Freak listed are they lsds? are the hicas model ones lsds? and do they require extra parts like a driveshaft or the axles? thank you in advance guys.

also i forgot to ask, if i get the hicas one then will the fact that it had abs make a difference in the install, also will a s14 lsd work without major modifications?

dont waste you money on a vlsdif you arelooking ot get more into drifting, even with regular fluid changes my friend went through one in abou 6 months. this is for hardcore autoX and drift. he now wished he would have got a 2 way sooner

S13, S14; VLSD (Viscous limited slip differential)

S15; Helical LSD

Helical LSD > VLSD

Clutch type > Helical

i know s15 has gear type, are there any others? i know bnr32/33 had clutch type but i have no idea how you could get one of thoes onto an s14.

man, people have gotten alot nicer here. when i joined nico, i was read "use the search button!!!!"

hey d1sr240, i understand your a newbie about the lsd. but seriously, you might want to use the search button top right corner of the page. there are lot of threads about the different types of lsd.

you don't have much options here, if you don't want to spend alot of money. from my research, like you i'm on a budget too, so i went with the stock vlsd from a 95 240sx from a junkyard. your always taking a chance when you buy used parts. (on the condition its in) it was a bolt on affair, i spent $350 for the lsd, you can find cheaper if you search around. if you don't have any mechanical skills then your going to have to pay for labor, more money.

i think that if you want some type of cheap lsd, it's going to be about $400 or so. i've heard of the phantom grip (which is called the poor man's lsd) for about $250. some say they suck and some say they are good. just make sure you get it installed correctly.

just like the saying "you get what you pay for." my bro has the cusco rs LSD and it is nice, price to pay $1025 installed.

hope this helps and good luck with your project.

I was not aware that the S15 used a helical LSD. I have been looking for one and other than buying a new one for 1 grand, i have been coming up empty. Would it be possible to get ahold of an S15 LSD for a decent price?
