I hate when problems "fix themselves", so I'm curious...

When I bought this car 3 weeks ago, I thought it needed a tune-up or something. The acceleration had a big delay from a stop or when accelerating at speed. Not that I need to be speed racer, but it was a concern.

Lately, I've noticed my car seems much more responsive. I just smoked some guy in a Honda S2000 earlier today (one of those chance red light encounters). This car is pretty damn fast alright. There's still a bit of a delay, but more like what is described as being normal with this car. I've only put Premium Fuel in it at stations like Chevron, 76, Texaco & Shell (have done that or mid grade with all my cars for years anyways).

It wasn't pinging or anything when I bought it, but something has changed. It had 1/3 - 1/2 a tank of fuel when I bought it, I topped it off afterwards with Premium. Could the previous owners have been running Arco or some other crap / low octane gas in it? Would that affect the performance without pinging?

Gas mileage has been good.Think I average 17/26mpg.

You probably wouldn't hear any pinging on low-octane gas, because the knock sensors and ECM react very quickly to it.

However, it will retard the timing, resulting in poor performance - which is what you just experienced.
