When I press the gas down more than half in my 1996 Infiniti I30T, the alternator and brake light come on. The alternator was just changed (rebuilt), and the battery terminals have been cleaned. Anybody have any idea as to what the problem is?

Take the vehicle and have a Diode ripple test performed on the alternator. Infiniti alternators can charge fine and still have a diode problem. Diodes let the current flow in one direction. There is also a tech bulletin regarding the engine wiring harness having a break in the wiring located where the harness goes from the engine to the right side (passengers side) strut tower. Depending on which wire is at fault will determine which system it will affect. I have seen intermittent wiring problems in that area to when you accelerate the vehicle, it will move the harness forward and backward which in turn can make and break a particular circuit (depending on which wire) is affected. I would first have a thorough test performed on the alternator and the battery. Testing the amperage under load, voltage test, along with the diode check.

On the Q the brake light and ABS lights double as alternator warning lights. I guess the ECU justs grounds (or puts 12v) on those circuits as a warning. Cars do all sorts of crazy things under low or high voltage conditions. My friend's Sunfire (and lot's of GM products) will have the gauges just float to max and then drop back when the alternator fails.

When you say the alternator was rebuilt, was it a factory reman or aftermarket? I'd say try to return it if you can, and get the OEM remanufactured unit. You may save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

Any chance your car had the alternator replaced in 1997 or 1998 and got one of the defective OEM units that were later recalled?

The guys over at Scottsdale Infiniti started the Infiniit forum on Yahoo..Nearly all of that fourms users who posted large numbers were made Moderators here. The users who had the most post at that time were Q45Tech and AAACOMP and I think Fred was in there ..FYI.

Nope... the Yahoo forum was inherited by TJ at Infiniti of Scottsdale when the original founder turned over the reigns. When Yahoo changed from the "clubs" to "groups" format, the original founder may have dropped off of the list...

Not terribly important, but fun to think back to the days of everything being non-searchable and all in one thread.
