The OEM wheel dimensions for a 2004 G35 sedan is a 17"x7" rim and 215/55/17 tire. I need winter tires and I can get winter rims 16"x6.5" with 205/65/16 tires for about 40% less than going with the OEM dimensions and the diameter of the wheel will be nearly identical to what is on the car already. Can I expect any major differences in handling, and will the ABS, VDC be negatively affected? Has anyone gone to a smaller rim diameter (a lot of people are going to 18 and 19" wheels) and noticed any major differences in performance?

That is a totally acceptable winter wheel and tire combo. Obviously there will be some difference in handling - but for the better when you are driving on snow / ice. When the road is dry you have narrower and taller tires so don't expect good times autocrossing

Should add that ABS and VDC will not be effected - as long as all tires are the same size.

I found the Yoko all season Avid's useless for our Canadian winter.

Last year I had Costco install the new line of Michelin Primacy winter radials on 16 inch rims. For day to day use I much prefer this tire to the V rated Avids.

The winter tire feels just as good on the highway plus they are much quieter (almost silent) and vibration free. They just make the car feel so much better than the Yoko Avids.

I am so impressed, next summer I will replace the Yoko Avids with Michelin Primacy summer tires.

One other thing. The Michelin winter tires are showing only 1/32 wear after one winter season (7,000 miles) which is very good for a winter tire.
