When changing timing chains, should you change all the sprockets as well?

Yes, you should change them out. Loosen the sprockets before removing the chain. Most timing chain kits come with the sprockets.

Hi Lobo

Can you elaborate on why? Other than the sprockets come with the kit.

When I was rebuilding my engine I found a timing chain that had no sprockets that was less than half the price of the kit that included them. I inspected the sprockets on my engine and couldn't see any appreciable wear so I just changed the chain. I've had no problems since.

A Cloyes timing chain is $17.95 at RockAuto. I think the local parts store wanted $50 for the kit with the sprockets, I didn't check Nissan.

Be sure to replace all the timing chain tensioner parts.

These cars are getting old high mileage. Depending on the wear of the engine, it would be a good idea to change them out if they come with the chains. ;)
