I was looking at an old thread with a similar circumstance but I didn't see a faq or any kind of pictures. My mechanic who lives over 300 miles away told me that only 3 bolts need to be taken off. If I could see any pictures or any advice for how to go about taking the starter off and redoing it, I would really appreciate it. It's cold up here and I don't have a garage. It's going to be very frustrating.

Situation my starter is dead. I need to repair it. I don't have a manual but I was thinking maybe some of you have done it before, posted some pictures of it on the internet of it being done, or advice on how to tackle this issue.

Let me preface this by saying I am not a mechanic. I had a really hard time with my alternator on my 90 240sx which may still be wrong. The weather hasn't been too kind to me lately. *for about 5 months now*. I am hoping as the warmer weather appears, today would've been a great day to work on the car, but I had other situations I needed to take care of.

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

i'll be the first to give you some advice about changing starter on a convertible because i went through it already. i was not a happy camper just to let you know. first the convertible has A/C so the line is in the way for you to get to the inner bolt, the outer bolt is very easy to get to. i somehow disconnected some heater hose and disconnected one bluish connector to have just enough room to break loose the inner bolt with a closed ended wrench. o yeah, make sure u disconnect the battery before start this job.

the upper bolt is much easier to get off if you having a ratcheting closed end wrench. not talking about a socket...but a wrench that ratchets. GL

You just have to be patient. After doing mine about 5 times (damn autozone starters), I was able to take one out & install in 30 minutes, haha. First time took half a day because of that stupid bolt.

The FSM probably has better instructions, but here is what I did basically:

1) Disconnect negative battery terminal2) Disconnect power wire from starter (think it was a 10mm or 12mm nut, but not positive)3) Disconnect ground plug off starter4) Get a bunch of different ratchets/sockets/gear wrenches & remove the 3 bolts for the starter - I was able to get mine from the top - you just have to kind of "massage" the existing hoses/lines that are in the way. From what I remember, I used mostly wrenches.

That's really all there is to it - the technique of getting to the bolts just comes to you once you are actually doing it - depends on how much of a contortionist (sp?) you can be.

With a flex head, too.

The first time you do the starter, it will take forever and you will be cursing Nissan engineers. The second time you do it, it will take 20 minutes.
