I'm posting this for my dad, so I don't have all of the little details, but pretty much, the battery keeps going dead. Once started, the car runs continuously, but the next time he goes to start it, later that day, or the next day, it will be dead. So he's thinking the alternator, and he simply wants to know if there are any DIY articles on changing it because according to him it looks impossible to get to?

Any help would be appreciated, thank guys!

Tough question to answer since you didn't even mention what kind of car we're dealing with.

I'm assuming thats this is a G50.... In which case, it's done from underneath. He will need to remove the mounting bolts for the AC compressor then lower it with the lines still attached. That will give him access to the alternator which sits above it.

The alternator brushes can go bad and this is what happened to me. I actually had someone show me how to rebuild that alternator and replace the $18 dollar brush. The alternator simply would not charge the Q and after it was rebuilt all was fine! I would suggest that first if you are a good DIY or have it done. Look at around $100 -$120 to have someone do it or simply buy a new one. Research my old threads with "alternator" in them and you will have my account..

The removal and install of the alternator is not that difficult, but IMO, a little time consuming and if you are going to do it, please check your belts and all your idler pulleys for seized ones.. Watch out for the bolts and the bracket.
