Alright, so I'm going to order the parts to fix the rings. My question is, would you guys recommend doing it from the bottom end (holding the motor up, dropping the subframe. Remove the oil pan, rod and main bearing caps and drop the crank, rods, and pistons all at once) or doing it from the top ( pulling the oil pan, removing the rod bearing caps, pulling the head, and popping the piston's out. ) I think it would be easier to do it from the bottom, but it seems that everyone does it from the top. Just wanting to know everyone's opinion. Thanks!

getting the crank pully off is a royal whore (ie it WILL be welded on there)... and you have to get it off to get the crank out. and how are you going to compress the rings to get the pistons back in there? I doubt you'll have room from the bottom!

Oh and you don't have to drop the subframe;) just un-do the motor mounts and jack up the transmission... it clears but JUUUST barely:) IM me Ryan and I'll explain how it only takes a couple hours tops to drop the pan, pull the head, and get those pistons out of there! I'll be on later tonight probably.

Will you just take the damned motor out of the car already!!! Sheesh why do people fight with a half-open engine in the car? Pull it, save yourself the beatification as patron saint of making a simple task a pain in the ***.:)

LMAO @ TMS. I didn't realize I was going to have to take the crank pully off to get the crank out. I'm ordering the rings, headgasket, and rod bearings today. Anything else I'll need?

pistons won't come out of the bottom, head has to come off.

I believe you also have to run a ridge reamer across the top of the cylinder before pulling the piston out.

I've never seen a CA that's been really ridged, tey seem pretty resilient. Certainly never heard of anyone using tools to flatten the ridge to remove the pistons.

That said I have seen other lumps (****ty fords mainly) that would need some assistance.

Jezz is correct, you can't do it from the bottom, one of the problem is your oil squirters, these are next to impossible to take out, at least on of of the engines that I worked on.

You will save yourself the headache and time if you go from the top,

the biggest problem is the great big lumps of block that get in the way. :)

a 10mm star socket (12 pointed) is perfect for getting the squirters out, they tend to be tight little buggers though.

Ryan,

You are a "Tard":alcoholic . Pulling the crank requires you to remove the transmission and the oil pump and you won't be doing that with the engine in the car. I think by now you get the picture:fruit . Anyways, here's what it looks like from a FWD perspective. BTW, this was too easy:fight

Well the transmission needs the imput bearing changed, so it was coming out anyway. I didn't think anything about the Oil squirters. I'll prob just pull it out of the car. I need to paint the engine bay anyway. I also found out that you can't get rings from any parts store. I went to all of the ones that we have here and they can't even get them. I guess I'll have to go to Nissan. Thanks for the help guys. It was late when I posted that and I was kinda tired. I haven't been home much. Darn girls....
