Changing Rear Shocks on a Desert Runner

I have a 2000 Desert Runner that needs the rear shocks replaced.Is it best to have the shocks compressed or fully extended to remove?Any else have esperience?

Crawl under and do it at ride height. Unbolt the upper and lower nuts and remove the old shock. It'll come right off. You can compress the new ones by hand to get them on.
