I went out this afternoon to change the rear pads on my 95 240SX SE.

Well after around 1 hour of grunting and getting nowhere - I could not get the piston to move back into the caliper to allow the fitting of the new brake pads.

I've never changed the rears before - however the fronts were a piece of cake - had my hands washed and brakes changed in approx 20-25mins..

Where am I going wrong with the rear pad change out?How do you get the piston further back?

RegardsGavin :)

Do the pistons have notches cut into them? If so, then you need to twist them to get them back in. You can get a tool from Sears for about $12 I think, but some people just use needle-nose pliers or snap-ring pliers.

Carefully pull the boot away from the piston and shoot a little WD-40 to lube the rubber boot or you'll rip it to pieces trying to turn the piston. Good luck. Sometimes they are a real pain to turn.

Yep - brakes sorted - thanks for the hint/tips :)

You can get an adapter at Autozone etc for your socket wrench to do this job for $9.99 if any of you need the proper tool. Comes with lifetime warranty too.

I'm not sure about the rest of you guys - but for me the brakes (performance) on the 240 is pretty disappointing overall. I guess that is why people do the 300 swap?

I used to own an '85 Bluebird (Maxima here in the USA) which had awesome brakes.

What kind of adapter, whats the name and part number. I tried doing my rear brakes about 2 weeks ago and i just ended up doing the rotors, couldnt do the pads. It looked like i was about to rip the rubber boot.

Hmm...can't find my receipt with the part # on it etc :(

I was wrong about the store - the correct one was Discount Auto Parts actually.

It is described as a caliper "piston removing tool" I think though? When I phoned about the part the guy knew exactly what I was talking about though.

Hope that helps - otherwise I'll swing by the store and get the part number if they don't know what you are talking about :)
