I'm wondering if it would be possible to change the power steering pulley ratios to firm up the steering on my 91 Q... Anyone tried it or heard of it on a Q? If so does it give worthwhile results?

Just something I'm thinking about to put into the list of "possible future projects".

Reset rack pinion preload to as firm as you desire.

Well you try it and let us know. That would make for a new thread as there seems to be a lack of interesting subjects to discuss lately. Well at least for us newer Q45 owners.

What I do know about the power steering pumps, at least on my 2000 is that it seems identical to what is used in the 240SX. I have not actually had the Q45 pump in my hands but have had the 240SX and the Sentra also. However looking in the Q45 FSM they all appear identical.

The pumps are variable vane type. They would be an ideal pump to use for non-critical, hydraulic projects apart from cars. Maybe install power steering on your moto-guzzi...

Follow proceedure in FSM...................tiny tiny increments say 5-10 degrees at a time.

It will change depending on PS fluid and rack temperature. It will change as PS fluid ages.

Excellent, I'll keep the preloading trick in mind. Definitely less trouble than replacing pulleys / pumps.

BTW, Desmoquattro, all that adjusting stuff is mentioned in the FSM.

I've got to read through that thing a bit more, I've only given it a cursory glance.
