You're going to need a TON of stuff off the engine. And even then, I don't know that you'll be able to properly get to the outside bolts/studs. You probably need to suck it up and pull the engine. I know your pain, but ultimately its going to be the better solution. The pull and all is doable if you have the time and patience to learn it and work with it.

Have any of you actually read the FSM for the Z32?

Yes its possible, whats more that is the way it is meant to be done, this is one of the reasons that this very robust engine didn't come with head studs from the factory. Read the FSM, there is a procedure for doing just that!

Yeah you can pull heads with the engine still in, its just gonna be a PITA. Two tips:

1. Head bolts are reuse able, despite popular belief

2. Don't forget each head has 1 10mm bolt holding it down in addition to the headbolts

1. Head bolts are NOT re-usable by the very nature of how they stretch. When you are tightening them the torque reading on a torque wrench WILL be off and there is no way of getting around it. Speaking from experience I would NEVER reuse a head bolt, its like reusing head gaskets, you're just asking for trouble.

2. That mutha#^$%ing 10m has gotten me every time and that with the engine out. It's more embarrassing than anything else when you forget that little bugger.

Yeah, Reusing head bolts (unless they're aftermarket head STUDS) is like reusing oil in my opinion. I just wouldn't risk the heartbreak of having to do it twice.
