What precaution should I take before I remove my fuel filter, I learned that i have to perform " fuel pressure release" in "work support" mode to release pressure to zero. Can someone explain to me what this means, and how i shouldperform this?
Or is there a simpler way of changing my filter?? thanks for your help!!
easy way - take off your gas cap, remove the under-hood fuel pump fuse, and run the car till it dies. Then you can replace the filter with a minimal loss of fuel, put the new one in, plug in the fuse, and fire the car back up.
Do not touch anything, turn key to "on", remove fuel filter quickly while smoking a cigarette, report back if possible. In all seriousness though, pull the fuel pump fuse and just let the car run until it dies, I've never bothered removing the gas cap but I dont really care about minor fuel leaks...they dry quickly anyway
Last time I swapped mine I just used lock pliers to loosely hold the hose ends vertical while I changed it and I barely had any spillage. My neighbor scared the s*it out of me, cause he started a pile of sticks on fire just as I started the car for the first time, but I didn't know and all of a sudden there is smoke everywhere.
I got the car started ok. It was just that after I started it I looked up and there was all this smoke around the car from his bonfire. I thought something in the car had caught on fire.
lol... i see everyone has a great sense of humor here!! thanks for the tips fellas!! I havent had time to change it yet, hopefully I can get to it by this weekend.
Ray - The hoses on my 97 where impossible to take off. I read on here you could try holding the old filter while twisting the hose to loosen it, but nothing would work. I ended up taking it in, and they said they had some sorta special compression tool to remove it. Well it took them an hour to get it off, the mechanic said it was a huge pain in the *** lol. Something to look out for.
My car smelled like gas for like an hour after the filter was changed..I was afraid my engine was soaked in gas and was gonna spontaneously combust. I'd be in bcar's situation then.
well... I finally got to changed the fuel filter... it was a fairly easy job...easier than I thought!! ofcourse with some helpful advices from this thread! once again thanks...
Yea i know what you mean entity... I had some trouble gettin the top hose off...i had to jerk side to side for awhile before the fuel had seeped in... then it just slipped off easily. Bottom hose came off easily. Guess i got lucky and saved myself from cuttin & gettin new hoses!
what's the impression of the mod now you did it? From what I understand, there is an increase in throttle response, but I wanted to hear it from you guys before I did something unnecesary.
I have a stock KA24DE, and I'm keeping it that way 'cause there's a chance I may end up in the lovely restrictive state of CA in a couple months. lol.
I actually changed my fuel filter today. Replaced it with a 300ZX OEM filter. Those hoses are a PAIN IN THE you know what to get off. THe top one was the worst the bottom one was easy as I just rotated the fuel filter while pulling. I just spread out the stock bracket as well.
I removed my gas cap , pulled out the fuel pump fuse and ran it till it died. Put two clothes under the fuel filter to soak up and spills. Pretty simple job thats worth doing.
OH and I changed my oil to Mobil 1 15W50 and replaced the oil filter with a OEM filter.
I do notice some throttle response and increase in MPG as well...added about 13 miles more than the usual total. Even though i still get horrible miles to full tank (200 miles). so over-all a highly reccomended install.
