i'm sure it has been done, but if someone tells you and you plan on selling the car without changing it back i hope you get busted! if you don't plan on selling the car, why would you anyway?

Yeah what does it matter? Unless you can't subtract.

S13's are rather hard (not hard just more time consuming) but the s14 is a peice of cake....

No I wont tell you heheHAHAHA

Ive done it on a few s14 se clusters but after seeing the actual car milage, and a max cluster (which requires the same steps as an s13). I only rolled them back or forward depending to match the stock milage.

Anything else is illegal and unneeded, as the engine isnt the only important part of a car. I wouldnt do it to mine, and there is no way im getting rid of my car even.

Learn like I did, if you really want to do it. You rip it apart and look at it. Its not hard to figure out.

I disagree on it being wrong. As long as it's a brand new engine with 0 miles, and you tell the customer how much mileage is on the body, it is fine. People do it all the time in Canada, and when my friends looked at cars with swaps, they liked having the odometer reset to the life of the engine.

Also, you run the risk of dishonesty EVEN if you supposedly "set it to the miles on the engine". Disconnecting the speed sensor has been a common trick among pre-96 Civic owners, as it's easy and poses no real performance problems...

BTW, 96_S14_SE, not only is it illegal, but it's incredibly easy to tell if an odo has been tampered with.

I wish all engines came with timers that showed the # of hours on the engine (like the big rigs have). Mileage is such a useless number.

The rental Neon I drove with 16K on it was in FAR worse mechanical shape than most NICO Q45's with 150K miles.

Rental cars are the worst cars ever. People drive them sooo hard you really can't expect it to be in good mechanical shape. I know the rental cavalier that I had a couple years ago was probably in much worse shape when I turned it in then when I got it. I'm also reminded of the TX2K2 supra meet where some of the people who had rental cars took them out on the road race track. Very funny but a crown victoria isn't designed to be a track car :)

edit: Back on topic...Do you have any idea how much trouble you will get in if you get caught rolling the milage back on a car? I suggest you check into that because it's definately not worth the few extra hundred dollars you might get when selling the car. Just something to think about.

I dont think getting "caught" is an issue:

All you have to do, is check the "odometer discrepepancy" box on the title when you sell.

Only when you dont check it, it's a problem.

Fred...:)

Im not disputing any legalities, as I know what can happen. The only times I didt it where when replacing the base with the SE s14 clusters and set it to the exact (to the mile) reading.

But you would be surprised on the s14 cluster. You can do it very simply (well to me) with 0% trace. The ease in changing is rather frightening to me, especially without a trace (well fingerprints but thats work aroundable). Now the s13's (and 3rd gen max's) that use a mounted motor and have the cog pin clamped into the steel bracket cant be done (I couldnt anyway) with out leaving some kind of indications.

Trust me, 96. It's easy to tell (no, not fingerprints).

But for the folks buying a high mileage used 240, they're probably not that observant to look for the clues. (No offense guys.)

Ok.... so this girl I know purchased a 98 Ford Escort with 22,000 miles. It has had several small repairs... including a new serp. belt, new tires, and other wear and tear items. When she started complaining about this to me I looked at the car. The brake pedal was worn down to bare metal on the lower right corner (usually a sure sign of higher miles).

Okay, point being she bought it from a reputable Honda dealer. Is there any way to absolutely PROVE it was rolled back, and if so what can be done in regard to retribution?

Did that on my dad's Solara..started to stutter, rev horribly, and actually stalled out a couple of times...I guess it does that on purpose though, cause it made me reclip the thing.

And for the kids buying high-mileage used 240s....does rolling the odometer back from 180k to 150k even matter? Once its high mileage I could care less...Plus as was stated, mileage doesn't matter, its how well the car is taken care of.

I LOVE beating the s*** outta rentals. My dad and I beat the s*** out of his leased Solara too....30k 3 oil changes...

i think the mileage would matter. especially on suspension components like worn out bushings. there's bushings on my car that more expensive to replace then buying a new motor! miles have everything to do with suspension part life.

Agreed, it is wrong to do so. Just because you did a swap doesn't mean you just lost 100k miles. Thats like rolling it back to 0 if you get some new performance wipers:rolleyes
