When changing a head gasket from a stock one, what is the best way to go about cleaning all the old gasket that remains on the block?

I got a gasket removing spray from Napa to soften up the headgasket then with a small putty knife and that was about it. Didn't want to scratch up the machined surface with some other crap. Then with a razor I went over everything again.
