Anybody out there changed their engine mounts (S13) without pulling the engine? Any advice on the easiest way to do this? Thanks in advance...

Youre going to have to at least lift the engine by some means, I would suggest taking off the transmission mount and unbolting the engine mounts. At thsi point you can use an engine lift to hoist it just enough to pull the transmission and engine mounts and replace them. Some people have also placed a large wooden block under the oil pan and jacking the engine up in that fashion..

What I am wondering is if anyone had changed engine mounts by unbolting the cross-member beneath the engine - you know, the one to which the mounts are bolted. There are only 4 bolts holding this member to the frame rails...heard it can be done by supporting the engine (hoist), then pulling the cross-member out...anybody done this?

Yep, you could do it that way too, just make sure you have the engine supported correctly.
