Hello,

Anyone have any helpful tips or tricks on popping out the engine air filter on a 2014/2015 Rogue?

I can get the locks to pop off but can't quite seem to figure out how to loosen the housing to look at the filter itself.

Thanks!

Here is the procedure as outlined in the 2014 Rogue field service manual:

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Rogue/2014%20Rogue/EM.pdf

If you want the whole manual, go to

http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/use-ni ... abase.html

NICO club provides these as a free service -- one of the great features of this forum.

Best!

I struggled with this, too. But I was able to change the filter last weekend, and with the help of the factory service manual section, it turned out not to be too difficult. (The explanation in the Owner's Manual was no help to me.)
Download the "EM" section of the FSM from the link in the previous post. Go to page 24 of the EM section. The item you need to remove is item 12 in the diagram--"Air cleaner case duct". As you stand at the front of the car looking into the engine compartment, the case duct runs from the "air cleaner case (lower)" (item 3 in the diagram) around the right side of the battery. The case duct slides up and down the air cleaner case. There is a small "clip" at the top of the air cleaner case that holds the duct to the case. Gently lift up on the clip, and gently pull the duct forward and up slightly, releasing it from the case. At the other end of the duct, next to the battery, there are 2 more clips on both sides of the duct. Pinch the clips to release them (or pull them out from their bottoms, whichever works for you). Once the 3 clips on the duct are released, lift the duct straight up out of the air cleaner case. The sides of the duct have grooves that engage the corresponding grooves in the air cleaner case. Then release the 2 clips holding the air cleaner case together, pull the case apart, and lift the filter out. Pay attention to how the filter fits in the case. The filter gasket is angled, and the new filter has to be put in correctly in order to be able to close the case. If you put the new filter in "upside-down" it will look like it fits, but you won't be able to clip the air cleaner case back together.
BTW, I bought a non-OEM filter on eBay for around $10. Wrong. The filter I received was for a 2014 Rogue Select, which isn't the same car or filter as the 2nd generation Rogue. I ended up buying an OEM Nissan filter for around $30 and (surprise!) it fit perfectly.

$30 is a lot for a disposable air filter. I tried all the local shops (Pep Boys, O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts and Autozone) as well as my local Oil Change shop. No one carries one other than the dealer. Ended up going to Autozone and ordered a K&N for $44 shipped. Got it in 2 days. Since K&N is cleanable/reusable, I will get my money's worth by Air Filter change time #2.

@ tutor772, Thank you so much for sharing it with such details. You have no idea what help that was. Even as I read the Service Manual, I couldn't figure out. Thanks to you I was able to change the filter with ease.
I saw the pinching clips from the air filter case, but wasn't sure if I should be messing with it. Once you confirmed I did it with confidence without issues.
Thanks again,
Ash

Anyone know of any good third-party engine air filters? I found the OEM one (16546-4BA1A) on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L857DJC/

And the K&N version (33-5016) http://www.knfilters.com/search/product ... od=33-5016

But does anyone else make engine air filters for the 2nd Gen Rogue? I've been searching for a while and haven't really found any alternatives besides these two.

ebay. Generic works just fine, and a fraction of the cost.

Timely post. I just went in for my 40k km service here in Greater Toronto Year. Even though as per the service schedule the Engine Air Filter replacement is not due until another 8000 km, they recommended to change this along with bunch of other things which was ballooning the simple Maint 1 visit cost from $90 to $800 (brake servicing front and back, throttle body, cabin filter (changed at 24k)).
I declined all of those. Today the dealer called back for servicing feedback and since I went to this new dealership first time, told them about all of these huge cost so called recommended service. He said he can bring the price down for the Engine Air Filter from $65 to $45 and said it looked dirty and I should get it changed if nothing else. I figured since he is giving discount, I will get it done now versus waiting for another 8k km and having bad engine performance.
Looking at the U$20 price for the OEM that a previous poster posted, looks like a decent enough price to have them replace it versus me messing with it breaking those delicate filter housing cases(i have had to do these with lawn mower, home vaccum cleaner). Yes $45 plus taxes is a lot, but then I don't want to do something wrong. Thanks tutor772 for the detailed post, it convinced my types to not go the DIY route and instead negotiate the overhyped dealer prices and get them to do it.

My 2014 Rogue is not 2.5 years old and mostly driven in GTA on Hwy 401. What frequency and mileage have others had to change this filter.

I replaced my air filter with a very good WIX filter (purchased at O'Reilleys) for ~$18. Perfect fit.
It has synthetic media (non-oiled). Very easy job to do once you understand how to remove the plastic intake plumbing (see manual/FSM/etc.).

I check my filter every 5K miles or so and with my style of driving/location can get 20K+ miles out of a good filter.

FWIW: I should note that I originally had replaced my dirty factory filter with the K&N oiled panel filter (which worked fine I think) but I became concerned about how effective it really was and went back to a high quality standard filter.

>> I will gladly sell the used (needs a cleaning) K&N panel filter for a fair price if offered.

Yeah...

The cabin air filter INSTALLATION is a PITA. You have to semi-crush it down for it to properly get back into the holder rails inside the air box. That is the reason why the filter is so "floppy". Also, only the OEM filter is really available (at the time of this post) and is somewhat expensive (under $30).

$20-30 OEM cabin filters are ridiculous. Especially for floppy filter media that look really cheap. That's why I just went with generic filters for the cabin instead for a fraction of the cost. I stayed OEM for my engine air filter change though.

Thanks for the video.
I changed the cabin air filter today and that was an annoying process, took me an hour to actually get it to fit
Dealer wanted 106 to change it

Will Try the engine air filter next
