So...I recently replaced my upper timing chain tensioner and replaced both guides. The upper tensioner was worn and was barely able to hold any pressure (it was causing my oil pressure light to come on for a second at startup).

Since I replaced the tensioner I no longer hear the loud, hollow arrhythmic tapping that I heard before. I *do* however hear what sounds like the chain rhytmically tapping on the plastic tensioner. It's barely audible above the fan and the injectors, but I can hear it with the hood open.

Is there a normal level of sound associated with the timing chain on a 240SX since this *is* a metal chain in contact with a plastic guide? Should I not hear anything at all from the chain? It occurs to me that I don't even know what a healthy KA should sound like.

Did you ever figure this problem out, or does anyone have any input. I got the same problem after changing the tensioner.

I don't so much have and answer for you but my KA did the same thing after I removed my upper guide/ replaced tenisioner. You can only hear it with the hood open and have to be listening for it. The KA was never the most civil engine nissan made so I wouldn't be supprised if that noise is somewhat normal.
