Changed transfer fluid tonight. Approx 2.4 ltr came out, even from the fill plug (small amount). Added new fluid and could only get in about 1.6 ltr before it would spill out the fill hole. Even put rear end up on car ramps and couldn't get more in. Should I be concerned? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, since you have an LE, I am assuming you have All-time 4WD. The service manual says that the transfer case should hold 3.0 liters. I would be somewhat concerned since you drained out 2.4 liters (which seems close enough to 3 liters) and could only refill with 1.6 liters. I don't know why it would accept less fluid than it drained.

Maybe you didn't give it enough time to drain?

Truck has 2H, Auto, 4H and 4L. I believe it is referred to as all mode 4wd which should take 3 ltr of fluid.

I didn't drive the truck before I drained it - it had been sitting for a week. Should it be driven to warm up the fluid?

I let it drain for about 20 minutes until it stopped dripping.

Seem really bizzare to me.

if i remember correctly, the fill plug was made lower than suppost to so you can not put in as much liquid as was in there, just as you stated, some came out of the fill plug hole, and i remember someone said on here a while back you tilt your car over to the right and fill it up some more.

Hahahaha I completely forgot about that thread. Yeah, that thread should explain everything.

Thanks everyone. Funny how I searched all posts and never came across that one?

Seems as though it is overfilled from the factory. I'm gonna drive it and keep and eye on it to see if I can put more fluid in.

Same here, just finished up doing mine. Same exact 2.4 ltr came out.

I was able to get about 2 ltrs back in. I have a manual suction gun (works both ways) that I can push the fluid in fairly quickly if I put some pressure behind it to force more fluid in the case. Then as it starts overflowing, I put the fill plug up there quickly and stop the fluid from draining from the filler hole. I probably get a little more than without the technique but not as much as came out. I'm thinking that this is going to be fine.

The fluid that came out was black. My truck is an '01 with 54k miles on it. I probably should have done this sooner, but still better late than never.

Oh yeah,

I drove my truck around the block (less than 5 minutes) to get it warmed up. And I took the filler plug out while draining. I got the same 2.4 ltr out of it that you did.
