Back in Feb. of this year! I went to a local oil change place (EZ Lupe Oil Change), to have my 1999 Nissan Frontier 4 x 4 (Standard) oil change! The Technication informed me; that I needed to have my Transmission Oil, Gear Box Oill and Front & Rear Deferintal Changed! So I did, for a total of $150.00 dollars! A week later, I heard a funny nose under the truck; when I make turns in parking areas (Parking Lot Areas)! When I'm on the road; I don't hear the Tension Noise (Which I call it)! I took my Truck back to the EZ Lupe and the Technication rechecked the Fluides they had replaced and they said it was fine! However, I and my Wife; still hear the Tension Noise when we make turns in the parking area! I even, took my truck to Big O Tires, to have the Truck Inspected but they said the Truck is fine! However, we still hear the Tension Noise! Please, Help Me and what do you all think; the Problem May be! We haven't driven the Truck since and We Miss driving our Frontier! P.S. Millage is at 168, 500 miles! Already had my timing belt changed, all belts changed and minor changes aswell! Also, My dad mention, "I should have the Universal Joint, Inspected"? What do you all think? And, Yes; I should know; more about my Nissan Frontier! Thanks, Brothers!

If you are hearing a metalic creak while the sterring wheel is turned as far as it can go that is most likely the steering stops on the front suspension. A little bit of grease on the stops will usually fix the issue.

I would like to post the image you need but the image server we use on NICO is down right now, so check your email for the illustration that will better explain it. The areas in PINK need to be lightly greased. The other option you have is if the stops are worn out you can order new ones from the dealer for around $20.00 a pair.

You should probably learn a bit more about your truck.

First, there were no Frontiers in 1997. A '97 model was still a hardbody.

Second, there is no timing belt in 96-98 trucks. They were all 4 bangers with timing chains that shouldn't need replacing.

I hope they filled the manual transmission with GL4 gear lube and not GL5 or the same stuff they put in the diffs. If you're even a little bit unsure, drain that stuff out and put the proper lubricant in there. Normal gear oil will eat the soft metals in the transmission and eventually cause a failure.

Good luck.

You'll know when a universal joint (u-joint) is starting to fail. The truck will vibrate badly because of play in the driveshaft.

Thanks! No, the Truck doesn't Shake! So, that rules out the Universal Joint! I did, find my receipt for the Work done on the Truck; in Feb., of this year! They used, Mobil 75/ 90 Synthetic Gear Oil for the Front & Rear Def. and for the Transmission SVC.

take it back to them and have them drain the transmission immediately

That's a GL5 lube.

Your owners manual will be specific about needing a GL4 and don't let them give you a line of crap saying GL5 is good for GL4 requirements.

GL4 is a little harder to find, but most Napa stores carry it in 2qt jugs.

Hello, Brothers! Well, the gear oil in the Transmission was Changed! However, when I returned Home (I was listening, for any odd sounds; under the Truck); I noticed when I lower the gears to 1st or to 2nd gear (when slowing down, to a parking space; only after driving for awhile, I hear this noise) I hear the Tension Nosie! Again, when I'm on the Street or High Way, there is no trouble shifting to 1st to 5th gear; only when I slow down and down shift to 1st or 2nd gear; when lowering to a parking space or slowing down in a parking area! Please Help!!!

Diagnosing a trouble spot by noise isn't the easiest thing to do for us. so you need to be more specific. What do you mean by a Tension Noise?

Is it popping?, Creaking, squeeking, clicking, ticking, burping, farting?

At the lower speeds you describe:

Does it make the noise all the time? Is it intermittant?Does it get louder or quieter as you come a complete stop? Are you on the brake pedal?Does the noise go away when you brake?Do you feel something in the shifter (vibration that matches the noise)?

Have someone drive the truck while you stand outside and listen. Youwill at least know where the noise is coming from.

Hello, Brother! Yes, I do understand; that listening to the "Noise" is very hard to determine the unknown? I will have someone, drive the truck and I will listen, for any type of "Noise"! However, its only when I drive for a period of time and come home; then I here the Noise! Also, maybe I'm not putting enough gas, when I shift down to 2nd or to 1st gear. When, I did step on the gas, the noise didn't come about! Like I have mention, the Truck drive fine and no problems, when on the road! Keep in mind, I only use the truck sparling and we use my wife's vehicle; all the time (Its Great on Gas)! Thanks, again brother!
