Basically what the topic says, when changing my fuel filter there was a constant gush of fuel coming out. I changed it quickly but still ...is this normal? Here is what I did:

(240sx 97First: Take out fuse 15A, then start the car. Let it idle till the car stalled and turned off.Second: Turn it on again to be sure to flush it out:Third: Remove the battery:fourth: Install the fuel filter (gush of fuel came out, luckily I had a cloth to absorb 80% of it)Fifth: While dripping fuel I managed to put in the fuel filter quickly, closed clamps again, put in fuse and attach the negative battery again.

Done.

Overall successful, the difference was overwhelming the car reves 3x faster. The fuel filter said Nissan on it..it has 80k miles I wonder if it was even changed? I'm second owner..OUCH!

did you take off the gas cap to relieve any pressure in the tank? I changed the filter on mine without taking the cap off, I sat around while at least 1.5 - 2 cups of gas poured out onto my driveway before I pulled the gas cap.

also, you dont' need to remove the battery.

No i didn't relieve the GAS CAP! i wonder if that was the reason why. Just take it off and it should've solved the problem!? I feel stupid if that's what it was

I removed the gas cap when I changed mine. Another thing I did was pull the fuse for the fuel pump. I then stated the car and let the engine die. There was still a little bit of fuel in the line, and there was a decent amount in the filter. There was maybe 2oz of fuel in the line still, and another 2oz still in the filter. This chore is probably impossible to do without leaking fuel. Unless of course you plug up the lines.

Because you didnt take the cap off is why there was much fuel. That's what happens when something is pressurized and you open it to the atmosphere. Fuel will get out everytime. Just how it goes short of coming up with something to suck it out.
